"Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. I sat at a table where were rich food and wine in abundance, an obsequious attendance, but sincerity and truth were not; and I went away from the inhospitable board. The hospitality was as cold as the ices." - Henry David Thoreau, Walden, or Life In The Woods…
These lines are from Thoreau’s essay, Civil Disobedience. In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau speaks out in a personal voice, where he exemplifies the Transcendentalist movement and philosophy he follows. The tone of these lines are portrayed by the use of the language, which indirectly describes that he feels negatively toward the State “forcing” people to live their life in in accordance to the set regulations of the State. In these particular lines, he demonstrates his opinion on how he will not be forced by the State to conform to society, and suggests that people should not live a forced life. He writes “They force me to become like themselves”, which directly shows how the State is pressuring Thoreau to abide their laws and rules.…
Some synonyms of the word ‘government’ include: ‘authority’, ‘regime’, and ‘leadership’. Now simply replace those words with: ‘manipulative’, ‘prejudicial’, and ‘corrupt’ and there lies the Thoreau’s startling precept about our government. In Henry Thoreau’s From Civil Disobedience, modern government and its regime are questioned— highlighting its inherent ineffective praxis. Though flaws in the government systems are alluded to, Thoreau declares that he is not in favour of the government being eradicated per say, just improved. Society however, are called to realize that—even if the government is deemed ‘better’— there are ‘congenital’ defects of such an omnipresent and invasive authoritative body. Thoreau brilliantly uses diction, tone,…
In Fromm essay” Disobedience as a psychological and moral problem”, he had explained about the difference between the obedience and disobedience, and what impact of a positive or negative on the human society. According to Fromm human life to live as human beings, must disobey want to develop it. "If you do not know single line human disobedience to obedience, he is a slave," saying that the prompt can be understood as such intention. At the same time, however, prompting the line only to be aware of if you do not know how to obey "human disobedience, he is only on the peninsula..: It (* Peninsula skip the insurgency and join a group or him) was called Peninsula is full of simple anger or resentment It was not likely to prompt bar is oriented.…
I agree that actions committed by the United States on the southeastern American Indians was ethnic cleansing. While viewing the assigned video, I determined two examples of ethnic cleansing. The passing of laws in Georgia restricting the land in which the Cherokee were allowed to inhabit served to concentrate them in a single area for the means of subjugation. Further laws were passed deeming the meeting of leading members to be illegal. Federal agents were also sent in to coerce Cherokee leaders into further giving up parts of their land. Arguably the most widely known evidence of racial cleansing revolves around the Trail of Tears. The Trail of Tears refers to the forced march of multiple Native American tribes to new lands predetermined by the U.S. government.…
Henry David Thoreau, the Harvard-educated 19th-century philosopher and poet, remains a major symbol of peaceful resistance because of his 1849 work, "Civil Disobedience," in which he questions why people would obey a government whose laws they believe to be unjust. On account of his opposition to slavery, Thoreau refused to pay taxes, an act that briefly landed him in jail in 1846 (a relative bailed him…
To be human is to be disobedient. For good or evil. disobedience has been the one constant, universal trait that characterized human beings since the beginning of time. Behind every great human achievement is an act of disobedience, a rejection of the conventional wisdom, a defiance of authority, or a decision, a choice made to take the path less travelled. History is replete with men and women who by their disobedience changed history, often for the better, though sometimes for the worse.…
“Human history began with an act of disobedience, and it is not unlikely that it will be terminated by an act of obedience” (Fromm, 1981, ¶1). Comparing this statement to the historical idea that obedience is a virtue and disobedience is a vice is the basis of Erich Fromm’s essay entitled “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem” (1981).…
If I told you a year ago that fear and hatred would run rampant throughout the U.S., you wouldn’t believe me. If I told you that public trust in the mainstream media was at an all time low, you wouldn’t believe me. If I told you that actual lies are being spun as “alternative facts”, you wouldn’t believe me. It sounds Orwellian. Because it is. This is our reality. Our reality is a president who spreads malicious lies about the press and gets away with it. A president who surrounds himself with the elite who are more interested in their financial gain than the American public. A president who might restrict the rights of LGBT communities, the rights of women, the rights of people of color, and --especially-- the rights of Muslims. We must resist…
To adapt to a changing world, progress must be made to socially accommodate this change. For any Progressive change to be made, someone must fight back against something wrong, or another words, be disobedient. As the Irish author Oscar Wilde one stated “it is through disobedience that progressive change has been made” and this natural human trait of disobedience is a catalyst for Progressive change.…
In the 1800s, women did not have the same rights that they do now. Because of this, feminists fought for women’s rights. Feminism is defined as the ideology and movements that have the goal of creating equality between men and women. Feminist movements in the United States have given women many more rights than they previously had. Some of these rights include the right to vote and reproductive rights (Feminism, 2017).…
Thoreau writes, “A minority is powerless while it conforms to the majority; it is not even a minority then; but it is irresistible when it clogs by its whole weight” (Thoreau 386). This line has the most meaning to be me because one person cannot change the world alone, they would need help. What one person can do though is turn a minority into a majority. I could also take this to mean that while being surrounded by all those who have fallen victim of the government and its “mind control” we could have very little to no say in the goings on of the government, the majority being everyone in favor of what the government has decided to do next and the minority obviously the select few who have enough will power and opinion and determination to oppose it.…
In the 1920’s it was said that the American Dream was initially about the realization of happiness. Everyone began to believe that money could simply buy happiness. Although, the phrase “American Dream” was not specifically used in the book it is quite obvious that Fitzgerald shows the significance and definition of the American Dream. He also uses symbols and themes during the whole book to demonstrate the American Dream. Some of the symbols he uses are the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg, the valley of ashes and the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock.…
In Fromm essay” Disobedience as a psychological and moral problem”, he discusses and compares the different kinds of obedience and disobedience, and how they can have a positive or negative impact on the human society. There are many physiological comforts to obedience. For example, when a person obeys the law, or is obedient to their superior it leaves them with a feeling of accomplishment. They feel as though they have succeeded in their said job, therefore they are accepted within society. Some people assume, to obey is to be accepted and to disobey is to be withdrawn from society. Another benefit of obedience is reassurance. I believe that Authorities would rather have people obey out of love, over fear because then it is a true thing.…
