A symbol that Stockett used in her novel The Help is the bitter seed. The bitter seed is a representation of how Aibileen acts towards white women. The bitter seed
began growing inside of Aibileen when her son Treelore died. Aibileen often says “A bitter seed was planted inside of me” (3) and that’s why she’s not as nice as she was to the white people who treat her as a lesser human being. Throughout the novel, Aibileen starts to be a little more forgiving and forgets about the bitter seed planted inside of her. These symbols are quite different from each other and each symbol has to do with the theme of each novel and we already discovered that these novels have completely different themes.
These three reasons are why I believe that these novels are not comparable because the themes have nothing to do with one another; the setting took place in different time span, and different location. The final reason I believe that these novels are not comparable are due to the symbols in the novels. The symbols have to do with the theme of books and we discovered that the novels have completely different themes. These are the reasons why William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Kathrine Stockett’s The Help do not compare to each other.
