Robert reminds me of the greek god Dionysus, the god of wine and festivals. Dionysus was always having parties or “festivals” and he was constantly drinking, just like Robert. Robert would drink and drive, come to work under the influence, and would constantly get snatched up by police because he was continuously high. Eventually Robert was in way over his head and found him in jail contemplating his existence. Robert spent many a night thinking in jail. He visualized his life without the constant arrests, a life where people respected him, and didn't’ think that he was a derelict. He longed to be seen as a credible actor, who could be trusted to show up at work. But the drugs called to him. He was addicted ,and he didn't know how to help himself. He wept. He was finally released from confinement much like Odysseus from Calypso’s Island. He was looking to return to his status before he was a hardcore addict. He decided to go get help at a rehabilitation center. He was there until he was no longer reliant on drugs. And now he was on the prowl to redeem himself. Robert was unable to find a single job due to his past addiction. No one believed he was a changed man. Robert was desperate for a job, he had nowhere to turn. Mel Gibson like an angel sent from heaven came and offered Robert a job in his time of need. Robert was to have a role in the movie The Singing Detective. This is a lot like Athena and Odysseus’ relationship. Mel like Athena was still helping their friend find what they were looking
