2. Dickens uses an abundance of different devices in order to describe Mrs. Gargery. Mrs. Gargery is described to be:
One who takes pride in a great reputation, and works hard to establish one
A women who cares for her husband but can be temperamental towards him at times
A foul looking women, tall and bony, and always enrobed in a coarse apron
Someone who has a hidden monstrous …show more content…
temper
A women who always seems to get what she wants (eg; making her husband marry her, at Pips suspicion)
Someone who is ungrateful for what she has (eg; complaining about being married to a blacksmith)
One who must always know what is happening at all times
Someone who is very austere about rules and routines
When Mrs. Gargery talks, she talks with a slight temper, and a tempestuous attitude, her actions are audacious and she is quite careful and thoughtful with all her actions, no matter the nature of them.
3.
The graveyard scene contributes to the mood and atmosphere of the story by describing an eerie place and leading into a chilling monologue. The Graveyard scene is described using words like bleak, vivid, dark, flat, course, and darkly, all very sinister verbs. The man who threatens Pip is described as dark, scary man, who a hunger for human blood. The setting of the scene, a graveyard, is excess-ably self describing, as graveyards are usually the scenes of paranormal, menacing, activity. The monologue throughout the scene also contributes to the mood and atmosphere by leaving the readers frightened and on …show more content…
edge.
4. The story being told from Pip’s point of view has many advantages, but also many disadvantages as well.
The advantages to telling a story in the first person involve being able to feel yourself in the characters situation even more. Say the main character is being harassed by a man, Describing in first person would allow for a more intricate and thoughtful description of the scene, compared to if a narrator told the scene. Feeling that you’re in the story is much more enjoyable than just reading about it Another advantage would be that it is easier to read a story in first person rather than in a third person. Having the character describe everything himself, and be in the story at the same time, makes for an easier following or this story. A disadvantage to writing the story in first person is that the writer might miss some opportunities to explain or described things in different or advanced depth or detail.
The weather or setting of the story could have a great affect on the atmosphere of the story, but if the character telling the story is inside a building the entire time, how will the weather have any affect on the story? It takes an experienced and detail orientated author to perfect first person story telling. One last disadvantage to telling the story in first person is that the perspective and perceptions of the story are extremely limited when you are telling a story through first person. The reader has limited opportunities to create their own opinion and views on the story, compared to when a narrator is telling the story, which creates endless opportunities to create their own view on the story.
