Synopsis Of The Play 'Rigoletto' By Giuseppe Verdi
Rigoletto is an operatic masterpiece created by the Italian, Giuseppe Verdi. Rigoletto premiered on 11th March 1851 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy (Rous). It is a tragedy. It is storyline mainly revolves around three characters: the promiscuous Duke of Mantua; Rigoletto (a court jester), and Gilda (Rigoletto's fair daughter). Count Monterone curses the Duke for “sexually abusing” his daughter and arresting him after he protests against the duke’s immoral actions (Martin). He also curses Rigoletto for encouraging the duke to seduce his daughter and for mocking him of his inability to do anything that can restore his reputation. This curse comes to pass as Gilda falls for the duke's charms and later dies at the hands of her father, Rigoletto, after sacrificing her life for the duke (Martin). On the other hand, there is the music drama, Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), which was created by the German, Richard Wagner (Rous). The Valkyrie premiered on 26th June 1870 in Munich at the Königliches Hof- und National-Theater (Rous). The Valkyrie is composed of three acts.
