In the world today, there are engineers, designers, and innovators who are working on ways to improve life even if life is fine as it is. IPhones are an appropriate example here. Apple is continuously creating newer and better versions of the iPhone because they bring in a lot of money. Newer is better. Humans are creating artificial everything. One example of this is artificial turf fields. They are becoming increasingly common in soccer and American football, as well as other sports. There are many benefits to synthetic turf, like the fact that turf is consistent, even playing surface in rain or shine, whereas natural grass would get ripped up when wet. Although artificial turf fields have many benefits, there are also some consequences …show more content…
Instead, sources were researched on joints and how synthetic turf affected them either negatively or positively, but it would be too hard to conduct research on this because it was too narrow and also had a multitude of variables. Rising interest regarding health risks of synthetic turf fields led to an investigative piece done by the National Broadcasting Company. The investigation examined the University of Washington’s women’s soccer coach Amy Griffin’s theory that the crumb rubber, the term for the shredded tire bits used as infill (infill is used in synthetic turf fields to give it more cushion and make it feel more like natural grass fields) in synthetic turf fields, was causing soccer players to develop cancer. She came up with this theory when she went with one of her players for her chemotherapy treatment. The nurse had mentioned in passing that the player was the 3rd goalie she had treated for cancer that week. Griffin decided she needed to be heard so she went for an interview with NBC and stated her hypothesis that the crumb rubber could be causing cancer. Around this time, American football player, Eric Berry, returned to playing football for the Kansas City Chiefs after having finished his chemotherapy treatment to get rid of
