● The war has nearly half of the population of Syria to scatter far from their homes and destroyed their standards of living.
● Along with the civil war, the emergence of the Islamic state there has also instigated many to leave their homelands.
● Due to this displacement many seek to find asylum in other neighboring countries.
● This has overwhelmed international refugee agencies as there are too many refugees to help situate.
● As a consequence this has forced those who couldn’t get help to take drastic measures, as nearly half-million people have taken a dangerous sea
passage to settle in Europe.
● The United States has accepted only 1,736 refugees as of May 2016, mostly consisting of women and children.
● The refugee crisis reached its peak during the 2016 American presidential campaign.
● In the election several candidates called for a ban on any new Syrian refugees.
● The reasoning for the ban included the risk of Islamic state fighters to pose as young Syrian men caring intent to launch terrorist attacks against the United States.
● Ignoring that risk, the Obama administration sought to admit nearly 10,000 refugees by September of 2016.
● However, as stated previously, only 1,736 refugees have been admitted. (That’s less than two percent of the quota assigned)
● The reason as to why it was so far behind is because there was not enough qualified personnel to handle the amount of applicants seeking asylum, says the United States State Department.
● Opponent against the Obama administration’s initiative claimed that even if there are more qualified individuals added meeting the established quota would be deemed overly optimistic and perhaps even dangerous.
● Trying to meet that goal would involve admitting nearly 2,000 refugees a month leading up to September.
● Among those admitted there may be a great chance that Islamic State devotees are amongst them.
● Other western countries have already admitted nearly thirty times the amount that the United States have.
● Germany who is among those western countries have said “the land of the free and home of the brave should be doing more.”
● Should the United States do more to help Syrian refugees? Or should the ban any more admissions to better protect the country? These two topics will be discussed later on.
