Summary-
In the article, Got Whiteness? Scholars Say you’re racist Sarah Nell discusses the main idea that racism is a system of advantage based on race. And if you’re white, you are racist because you benefit from that system. Even if you don’t want to. She later writes poses readers with several questions that consisted of the following; Are you racist? Do you have white privilege? Are you a beneficiary of racism? According to the article if you are white, some sociological argue you should answer yes to all of these questions.
Reaction- I was surprised to hear the idea that all white people are racist, but I was even more surprised to read that they are not racist because of discriminating against other races or the prejudice they hold; but that there racist because they feed of the advantages they experience because of being Caucasian. I find it extremely hard to agree with the statement above because I think being racist is a choice. I would like to assume that people are not born being racist. But on the other hand, the definition of racism I like to agree with is a system of advantage based on race. That definition ultimately makes all white people are all racist because they do feed off the system of advantages and are at the top of the system. I don’t agree with this so I need a new definition of racism that includes a system of advantages but also allows racism to be a choice not something you’re born into. This has opened my eyes to how difficult it is to describe such a vast topic as racism. So after reading this article I have abandoned my attribution to the previous definition that racism is a system of advantages based in race.
