According to VRIN analysis, Wal-Mart’s work environment and management disciplines are distinguishable. Although at the first view the company’s competencies sound temporary, these competencies form a sustainable core competency for Wal-Mart’s superior profitability. In order for a competing firm or a potential entrant to compete, it requires a very strong financial capability to invest in integrated technology of supply chain and superior logistics system. It is also very difficult for any company in the industry to achieve the large sales volume like Wal-Mart does to have such a bargaining power over suppliers. The structure of the company’s management and communication styles, operation autonomy inside Wal-Mart, and management team though…

In the study of management is very interesting making an analysis exercise of a market company like Wal-Mart which has revenues greater than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of many countries. The last fiscal year, ended January 31 2013, Wal-Mart reported revenues of 466,1 US billion (Walmart Inc., 2013). This amount is greater than the last GDP reported by Colombia of USD 362,2 billion or Argentina of USD 347,3 (Portafolio 2012). If this company, Wal-Mart, were a country it would rank as a rich country just below South Africa and above Switzerland, Belgium, Venezuela, Austria, Chile and Others (World Fact Book, 2012). Not only is amazing analyzing a company which its revenues are bigger than entire countries’ economies and trying to determine which are the factors for this success, what things has this company constructed, what are its strengths, how is it dealing with competitors, and what are its core competences but also leaves many lessons.…

Examine the manner in which Walmart’s business philosophy has impacted its perception of being unethical towards supply and employee stakeholders. Provide one example of Walmart in an unethical situation. Wal-Mart stores, Inc. is the world’s largest retail enterprise. It is also the world’s largest employer. Mr. Walton the founder of Walmart always believed that customer service and low pricing where the main ingredients for a successful company. Mr. Walton had a 10 foot rule from the beginning which meant that if his employees where within 10 feet from a customer that they must greet the customer and ask if help was needed. He also believed that you shouldn’t wait for tomorrow what you could do today. During past years Walmart has changed Mr. Walton’s philosophy by trying to make everybody happy instead of keeping with the original mantra. Walmart started to compete with other retailers and started to raise prices and remove certain items that Walmart originally sold. One unethical situation that Walmart was involved in is their reluctance to be unionized. Walmart went out of their way to threaten workers not to join unions or they would be terminated. Another unethical decision Walmart made was hiring people as part time workers so they would not have to pay medical benefits, also by making employees only eligible for benefits if they work 30 hours or more, and when they fell short of 30 hours they would lose their benefits.…
