During the late 30s and early 40s Duck Island was the place to go to hang out and forget about it all. A place full of nature and fun but it had a very unexpected twist hidden in the bushes. November 8, 1938, Vincenzo Tonzillo, 20, and Mary Myatovich 15, became the first victims of the phantom. Another couple down the walk heard the screams and found Tonzillo dead in a pool of blood, by their car. Myatovich however, was still inside the car as if she was planted there, bloody but somehow still alive. As she was rushed to the nearest hospital she regained consciousness long enough to tell police what had happened. She told police she ran from the attacker but he soon shot her, throwing her to the ground. Tonzillo was a married man, and Myatovich …show more content…

Richard Strout is the true killer of this story. This man walks through the “front door” (Dubus 107) of his ex-wife’s house and proceeds in shooting Frank “twice in the chest and once in the face with a nine millimeter automatic” (107). Standing over the blood spattered couch he shifts his eyes from the brainy chaos, which was a man’s face just seconds before, to the children that are sitting on that same couch. He then looks at the mother of those children, his children. She is not looking at the killer, rather she is intently staring at her babies who are covered with the remnants of the man they have recently begun to call dad. And how does the executioner react to this entire scene? He “went home to wait for the police” (107). He waits for the police as though he just stole a loaf of Wonder Bread at the dollar store. This man is cold, grey and calculating. He goes home to wait because he knows what he has done, he lives in it, accepts it. Matt and Ruth, Frank’s parents, will never accept the cold blooded murder of their son.…

The film gives an ironic sense of violence. It has its share of gun slinging but it is portrayed to be necessary in the makings of a hero. For example, the use of violence that Charlie displays is viewed as positive when used against evil forces that are threatening the community. Charlie’s professional background in the field of violence suggest that he is a cold blooded killer but his use of violence and skills elevate him to hero status. In addition to the unlikely “heroes,” the film gives the characters un-Western characteristics. Classic Westerns rarely have characters that profess their love when they are up against a force where the outcome is uncertain. The “hero” needs to be alone; he cannot risk love getting in the way of a man’s duty. However, Charlie confesses to Sue that he has feelings for her.…

The sun hung from the middle of the sky and seemed to almost liquefy the city below. The street reflected the heat like a tanning mirror placed beneath you. A car alarm echoed throughout the wide block before Bank of the West – an average looking bank painted tan with horizontal architecture that swept up the front of the structure. Two bullet holes plastered the echoing car like stickers placed meticulously on a movie set. Steam seeped from the engine block through the cracks of the hood and out into the blistering air, evaporating almost instantly in the blaze. A group of firemen detached the battery and doused the engine of the car with water, sending even more steam once again into the heated air. News reporters stood in front of bulky white vans, ducking the heat under sidewalk trees and overhangs from neighboring buildings. A bulky group of local citizens crowded behind police barriers surrounding the bank in an extensive ring. The barriers held back the murmuring crowd as chatter about what had happened drifted between their ears. An abundance of police officers stood around silently like mutes with sweat dripping from their brows, waiting for the detectives to finish and vacate the scene so they could do the…

"Pack what you want, I have already arranged an escort to the capital." The night was calm, and the two left in the morning, before anyone awoke. They arrived at the capital late the next day, when the sun fell slowly over the horizon. A beautiful orange sunset greeted them to the city. They walked through the town towards their new home, which the escort had also arranged for them. The two kept their heads down, walking swiftly toward their destination, not wanting to be noticed. Yet, the civilians of the capital eyed them strangely. When they arrived at the new cobblestone house, Juan Tomas swung the door opened, not looking back. The house was the same size as their grass hut, but it had an actual bed and a real light bulb. Juan Tomas sat down on the bed, "I have made it out of that awful town!" He shouted. Suddenly the door was crushed to the ground. A white man in a official suit ran into the house: an official. "Put your hands behind your head! The men you hired to kill your brother have been caught and confessed everything." Juan Tomas reached for his knife, pulled it out of the pocket, and flung it at the man, all in one, smooth motion. The man reached for his rifle, but it was too late. The man lifeless body dropped to the ground. Apolonia screamed as the corpse fell onto her feet. Juan Tomas acted quickly, kicking the body under the bed, grabbing his wife by her hand, and running out…
