Checking my privilege In Tal Fortgang “checking my privilege”, he describes what checking your privilege is and how it works against what it is trying to achieve: equality for all and realize the mistakes of the past. In it he also described the hardships his family has gone through to get to where it is today. After reading it I started to view the similarities between his family and mine. Most of the support for his argument comes from the hardships his grandfather, grandmother, and father had to overcome and accept. Both his grandparents lived in Europe during world war two. His grandfather had to leave his home when the Germans invaded Poland and had to live in Displaced Persons camp, while his grandmother was in a death march and was put in a concentration camp after that(Fortgang 377). His father was also a man that faced many hardships. His father had to work many hard hours and having little time to spend with his lovely family(Fortgang 378). Fortgang’s definition of privilege has similar feeling to mine. Privilege feels like someone is upset with the way things are going for them and need something to quickly bring down the others around them because of differences in race, gender, and religion. Which is unfair to everyone. Just because someone is a certain color, age, gender, height, hair color, or lives somewhere; you can't go with the basic stereotypes that exist.
