A Tale of Two Stories

My objective in the following paper is to reflect on my previous experiences of instances of voicing and acting on my values in the workplace. I am going to do this by first writing about an instance in my career when management gave me an assignment that went against my values and I spoke up and did something about it. I will then reflect back to my decision by first discussing what I did and what the impact was, I will discuss what motivated me to speak up and how satisfied I am with the decision, and finally I will discuss a few things that may have made my decision easier, some of which I could have controlled and some of which I could not have. The second part of this paper will be similar to the first. I

Also by that point in my internship I realized I did not want to work there. I felt they were treating us like cheap labor and was turned off by the company. The frustration of the entire summer just mounted and I really didn’t care what the consequences were. Given all this it was a pretty easy decision for me to speak up. There is nothing that really could have made the decision easier as it was very simple. I couldn’t control the treatment but once I realized I wanted out I could control how I reacted to it. I will say though, had I not been fed up with the company it would have been tuff to say something, especially if I had wanted a full time job at the conclusion of the internship. I will say though, in my career I do find it easy to speak up in any situation if you have 100% support from your direct boss. If you do he will support you to speak up to others, and will respect when you speak up to him. It is important to build that trust early so you always have …show more content…
This instance was at the same company but I will admit I by myself chose to make my decision. I had no bosses, or anyone at all around me actually. I was out entertaining a client in my second week of work. I am thinking how cool this is to be 21, first job, and out entertaining Major League baseball players. So to make a long story short, I am entertaining a couple players in the hotel bar and a certain married player hands me his phone and starts heading to his room with a women he had met at the bar. I ask him want he wants me to do with this and he looks at me, almost with a shocked look as if I should know without asking, and says, ”This is for when my wife calls, tell her I am in a signing and will call her back

    * The situation I have chosen to talk about is something that happened to me. It was work related, my first job actually. I got it through a program that is offered to people who are 18 and just graduated, it was to teach you how to keep a job, what to do at interviews etc. You got paid as you would if it was a real job. You got to decide on what field you would work at. I of course wanted to go to school that deals with psychology or social worker even something in the medical field. It took a while for the main women in charge of everything to find a location for me to work at. I worked at her office until she did.     "A Tale of Two Divorces" by Anne Roiphe was alarming. I felt great sorrow for her mother, as she retold the failure of her parents marraige. It bothered me that there was a point in which her mother was willing to leave her father because of his abusiveness, yet then submitted herself to pardon him, and not leave him. Roiphe did the same when she was on ithe verge of divorce; she tried to find excuses for her husband's immoral actions. She explains, "my husband had other women and I thought it was an artist's privelege[...]" (208). Or when she states that her husband"went on binges and used up all our money. I thought it was poetic[...] I was always apologizing" (208). Perhaps there was a point in which these women allowed themselves to be naive and let the men in their lives to endulge in the stereotype of male superiority, where he is a womanizer, drinks excessively, critisizes his wife, and expects his house to be in perfect condition. I do, however, admire Roiphe for her strength in leaving that unhealthy relationship while she still could. This is why she refers to divorce as "an emergency escape hatch" (212). If a person is in a relationship that is truly distructive, then it is best for that person to distance themselves from that relationship, in order to save themselves from further misery and insecurity.…

    This note begins with the assumption that most of us want to find ways to voice and act on our values in the workplace, and to do so effectively. We focus here on situations where we believe that we know what is right and want to do it, but we experience external pressures – from our boss, our colleagues, our customers – to do otherwise. As a result, we are not sure how to raise our concerns. The focus here is not on situations where we are tempted to do something we believe is wrong, for our own personal gain and because we believe we can get away with it. While this is a relevant topic, it is for another day. Now some might say that what we really want is to be able to feel like we have voiced and acted on our values. And this desire may lead us just as easily – perhaps more easily – to focus our energy on finding ways to rationalize what we say and do such that it appears consistent with our values, as opposed to focusing our energy on finding ways to actually be consistent with our values. Research on self-bias would tend to support this view.1 Others might point out that the real problem in the starting assumption is the idea of voicing and acting on our values “effectively.” That is, given the organizational and personal barriers to acting on our values, success in this arena is elusive.
