Tally In The Series 'Uglies' By Scott Westerfeld
Characters and the Futures They Develop

As characters form relationships with one another, their future gets deeply impacted. This can be shown in the “Uglies” series by Scott Westerfeld. In the series, Shay’s brutally honest ways change the protagonist, Tally Youngblood, in ways they both never imagined. This and other bonds that Tally forms with different characters is what shapes her destiny.

The first installment of the series, Uglies, is where Tally’s journey begins. This starts when Tally becomes invested in hoverboarding due to meeting Shay. This is important because I think Shay may have been trying to prepare Tally for travelling to the Smoke. Also, ever since learning how to hoverboard, Tally spends a lot of time on one throughout the story. Tally is further affected because she is then forced into finding Shay so that she can be brought back from the Smoke. This was a hard blow to Tally because she desperately wanted to leave behind her “ugly life” with Shay and go become a Pretty. During her journey, Tally is left alone with her thoughts on her situation and Shay which leads to her feelings of responsibility for Shay’s actions and outcome. At the end of the story, Tally now feels guilty and is determined to fix what she has done to Shay and the friends she makes at the Smoke.

As a result, her decisions are affected by her feelings for Zane. Another change is that Shay has now become even more audacious as a character compared to how she was in Uglies. Now that Tally has new conflicts to face, Shay’s change in demeanor distresses her. Shay’s newfound boldness is shown when Shay uses her power as a Cutter to turn Tally into a Special. In this book, Tally’s old and new bonds are greatly

Some of the redeeming qualities of this book are the true value of friendship, which is represented through all of the characters in this book. It also teaches us the importance of honesty. If Lucky was honest with Bridgette about her feelings instead of just running away, it would have saved her a lot of heartache, and the feelings of one of her best friends, Miles. This book also encourages the use of your imagination to decide what lucky’s higher power is, one of my favorite aspects of this book.…
