SECTION 1:
History of Sri Lanka
People from the Tamil region of India emigrated to Ceylon (this was Sri Lanka’s name before 1972) in between 3 BC and 1200 AD. Upon their arrival, the Tamil rulers fought the Sinhalese rulers for control of Sri Lanka. This resulted in the Tamils, who were mostly Hindus, to claim the northern part of Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese, who were mostly Buddhists, claimed the southern part of Sri Lanka.
In 1505, the Portuguese took control over Sri Lanka until the Dutch India Company forced their way into control from 1658-1796. In 1796, the British took over Sri Lanka and in 1802; Sri Lanka became an English Crown colony. In Sri Lanka, the British started to develop rubber, tea and coffee plantations. On February 4 1948, the Tamils and Sinhalese came together to become a self-governing authority.
24 years later, the government of Ceylon changed the name of the country to Sri Lanka.
Landmarks
Sigiriya
Sigiriya is an ancient site in North Central Sri Lanka. Sigiriya contains the ruins of an ancient palace which was built under the reign of King Kasyapa, who reigned from 477AD-495AD. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations.
The Sigiriya rock is 180m with steep steps that lead up to the palace, which has a range of chambers, stairways and pools. About halfway up the stairs, two giant lion paws can be seen. These were part of a huge lion head that had its mouth wide open, which was the entrance to the palace. The lion head is now ruined.
Around the palace, there are two moats and some pools surrounding. The ruins of Sigiriya were discovered in 1907 by a British explorer named John Still.
Festivals
Although Sri Lankans celebrate many, many festivals some are more important than others. The following festivals shown, I have chosen because I feel that they are the 3 most important festivals.
Thai Pongal
Thai Pongal is celebrated by Hindus in Sri Lanka. Thai Pongal is celebrated on the 14th of January to pray to the sun god. Thai Pongal customs include cooking Pongal and sharing the meal with family, friends, neighbours and non-Hindus.
Independence Day
On the 4th of February every year, all Sri Lankans celebrate Independence Day. In 1948, on the 4th of February Sri Lanka gained independence, hence why Sri Lankans celebrate Independence Day.
Sinhala and Tamil New Year
From the 12-14th of April, the Sinhalese and Tamils celebrate New Year. New Year is a big celebration in Sri Lanka, new clothes are worn, festivals are held and usually, the New Year is a public holiday for the country.

1. After years of polite submission to her male counterparts, Janie gains her voice in Chapters 7 and 8. Prior to her defiance of Joe, Janie observes the way Daisy, Mrs. Bogle, and Mrs. Robbins are treated by the men. These three Eatonville women provide caricatures—quick, stereotyped sketches—of what it means to be a black woman in this small Florida town. In what ways do these caricatures highlight a larger disrespect toward women? How do they show Janie’s increasing difficulty with the way men judge women?…

Shirley Jackson is most famous for her short story ‘The Lottery’ and her novel ‘The Haunted House’. She has been applauded for her fresh approach towards American Gothic writing. There are many works dedicated to the gothic elements her stories contain. However, most critics overlooked the feminist elements that most of her stories have. The two short stories discussed in this essay both have female characters who are outsiders in their society. Careful examination of the protagonists’ course of action, setting, and symbolic references Shirley Jackson put in both of the stories shows that the female protagonist in both ‘The Lottery’ and ‘The Tooth should be considered as a woman with a feminist attitude towards a male-dominated society. The first short story which will be discussed is ‘The Lottery’. The second story to be discussed is ‘The Tooth’. In order to get a clear view on why these two short stories can in fact be considered stories with a feminist message, this essay will first of all explain what feminist theory consists of and how this theory applies to short stories.…

Power Sharing in Belgium Belgium is a small country in Europe. Division of Population Flemish (Dutch speaking): 59% Wallonia (French speaking): 40% Remaining 1 % speak German. In the capital city Brussels, 80% people speak French, while the rest speak Dutch. The minority French-speaking community is economically and educationally well-to-do in comparison to the Dutch-speaking majority. For accommodating the interests of the minority and the majority, Belgium adopted a unique system of power sharing. The Belgian Model of Governance The French and Dutch-speaking ministers are in the central government. Some special laws require the support of majority of members from each linguistic group. Many powers of the central government have been given to state governments of the two regions of the country. Brussels has a separate government in which both the communities (French and Dutch) have equal representation. A ‘community government’ exists. It is elected by people belonging to one language community. This government engages with the cultural, educational and languagerelated issues. This kind of governance has prevented a civil strife between the two different linguistic communities. Power Sharing in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka has a diverse population with 74% Sinhala speakers and 18% Tamil speakers. Among Tamils, 13% are called ‘Sri Lankan Tamils’ and the rest ‘Indian Tamils’. Most of the Sinhala-speaking people are Buddhist, while most of the Tamils are Hindus or Muslims. There are about 7 % Christians, who are both Tamil and Sinhala. Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948. In 1956, Sinhala was recognised as the only official language of Sri Lanka; thus, disregarding Tamil. The governments followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs. A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism. A feeling of…
