The Good and the Badde has five stereotypes of women in the middle ages. The stereotypes are Quiet woman, Virgin, Good Wife, Wanton woman, and the Unquiet woman. The ranking of the stereotypes depends on the person.
The Taming of the Shrew is a play about two girls named Kate and Bianca. In the beginning Bianca has two guys trying to woo her, and their names are Hortensio and Gremio. Then Lucentio sees Bianca, and he wants to woo her. Kate is a shrew, and there is not one guy that wants to marry her. The thier father Baptista say that he would not marry off Bianca before Kate because she was younger, and Bianca could not see any guys. When Lucentio hears this he changes places with his servant Tranio, and acts like a tutor so he can see Bianca. Then a man named Petruchio, who is looking for a wife with a big dowry. Kate, and he begins his taming process. He makes Kate realise that if she just agrees with him life will be a lot easier. Then Tranio dressed as Lucentio wins over Bianca. Lucentio’s plan fails after his dad comes to see him, but do to a horrible plot things turn out for the better.
Kate and Bianca both change a lot during the play.
“Girls, girls! Wipe those frowns off your faces and stop rolling your eye...Come, come, you weak, ungovernable worms!”(Ⅴ.ⅱ.145-178)
Kate was a Unquiet woman according to the Good and the Badde's stereotypes. She was not afraid of stating her opinion. When she married Petruchio, Kate was not very pleasant person. Then the taming process started, and she didn’t get it. She was still being a shrew. Then Petruchio taught her that if she just agreed with him everything would go over smoothly. Kate went from a Unquiet woman to the good wife.
It’s not really clear if Bianca changed or if she was just good at manipulation. If Bianca went through any change she would have gone from a virgin to a wanton woman, but it is not really clear she went through change at all.
10 Things I Hate About You is based of The Taming of the Shrew, but it is set in a more modern time.
In the movie Bianca and Kat are sisters, and their dad will not let them date. Kat is like a big feminist, so she does not have an interest in dating anyway. Then their dad says Bianca can date when Kat does. That is when Cameron, the movie version of Lucentio, makes a plan to get Kat a date, so he can have Bianca. When he realises he does not have any money, Cameron tells Joey, who is the movie version of Hortensio and Gremio, if he can pay someone to go out with kat then Bianca is his. Joey then pays Patrick, who is the movie version of Petruchio, to go out with Kat. Patrick gets real feeling for Kat, but still takes the money. The Kat finds out about the money. Cameron gets Bianca, and Patrick buys Kat a guitar. Patrick and Kat makeup, and then they make out. Then a band starts playing on the
roof.
Bianca and Kat are changed a lot by the end of the movie. Bianca is more of a wanton woman in The Good and the Badde stereotypes, but since the movie is set in modern day times. The whole thing seems more empowering. Kat goes from a hardcore feminist to teenage girl in love to heartbroken teenage girl in love, and then back to teenage girl in love. The Good and the Badde doesn’t really cover that.
