Tan Anecdotes
With all those intriguing anecdotes, we can see that Tan is never considered as a talented writer when she grew up, and what made she stand out is because she loves language. Mother tongue “shaped the way Tan saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world”, and it is also a treasure for us to find the root of ourselves, since it consists the tradition of a culture and the heritage of a family (Tan, 398). The spirit of Tan is not only applicable on writing, but also many other fields which right now may seemed as our weakness. Be confidence and have passion on doing what we loved.

The essay “Mother Tongue” describes a writer who grew up with a mother of Asian origin and the limitations created by her mother’s speech. The author, Amy Tan, defines her mother’s English as “broken” and that it created communication barriers. For example, when Tan’s mother would need to call her boss about work, she would rely on her daughter to make the phone call and use proper english. When Tan decided to go into English in college, it seemed foolish since she was more skilled in math and science. The author also mentions how not everyone’s speech is the same, but that is not a bad thing. Tan decided to start writing fiction, and write a book in a way her mother would comprehend. Though the writing was harshly critiqued, Tan knew she…

Akwasi, I had never thought about tanning bed usage being a type of addiction of behavior repetitiveness. That's an interesting point, as something becomes a habit we tend to just continue to do it without consciously considering any consequences of it. I didn't know about any possible issues with the DHA used in the sunless tanners either. That's another consideration we should take into account before deciding to use them even though they are considered at the levels used with them to be non-toxic and safe. I have used a sunless tanner occasionally in the past, but this will make me more alert to be continuously checking for updates of the safety of their usage. It is really eye-opening to see what a health risk tanning beds can be, alarming…

Anzaldua would not really agree with Tan’s goal for her writing. In a society where perfection is practically expected but impossible to achieve, language is one of the many ways that anyone around us can judge us. It is as Tan said, “…the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. “ Tan even said how her mother’s English ashamed her, that because her mother’s English was limited, it limited her perception of her mother, and that since her words were said imperfectly her mother’s thoughts were imperfect. There are instances every day of people that are not fluent in English, not being treated with the same respect, kindness, and service as their counterparts that are fluent. For some reason, it is embedded in most Americans’ minds that if someone cannot speak English as well as themselves, they are either not intelligent, not worthy of their time, or even not considered to be anywhere near important as someone who can.…

What drives a mother to take her daughter to a tanning salon? Patricia Krentcil, also known as “tanning mom”, was accused of taking her five year old daughter to a tanning salon. When a concerned teacher saw the young child with a sunburn, she contacted the authorities. Krentcil was dumbfounded when she learned of this accusation. Although Krentcil did take her daughter to the salon she claimed that she never actually took her into a tanning bed. "She never went in," Krentcil told the [“Today”] show. "It was beautiful out, and they went into the kiddie pool. She's a redhead. She got sunburnt" (Moye). It’s news headlines like this that make people reflect back on their own habits. Is tanning really worth all the harm and trouble? Tanning causes premature aging, discoloration of the skin, blisters, and even eye problems such as cataracts and blindness. Tanning is unhealthy and addictive; the risk of dying is not worth a golden glow.…

Part of Rabel’s classroom literacy instruction was also focused on him writing either the days routine in the morning or after a lesson. I was able to observe several things about Rabel as a writer. I noticed that Rabel enjoys to wre, but once again has a hard time staying on task. Rabel is very intelligent and can write about almost anything. When they were learning how to write poems, I observed him create a poem about the day he went to the zoo. Rabel is a very interesting young boy that when is focused, he can complete any task assigned to him. I also noticed that his personality comes out in his writing. While Rabel was writing I noticed that he wasn’t scared to use words he didn’t know. His teacher encouraged her students to try their…

The essay “Why I am a writer” from Pat Mora explains why the author loves to write. She enjoys reading books and through her writing she would like others to discover the same joy she feels when she reads a book. She loves writing because she can find out more things about herself and also describe them. Most importantly she is a Hispanic writer and wants to share her ideas and stories because she believes it is important for Hispanics to take part in literature. I also think writing is a great way to express myself and my feelings to others because you can present your ideas in a more vivid way.…

The art of writing is a unique skill that requires the writer to have great flexibility and be open to improvement. Some may consider themselves a “perfect writer”, when in reality, no one is, and will ever be. Writing is a process that requires one to continuously build on skills learned in previous situations, applying new techniques and strategies to future writing projects. Different settings require different writing styles, and with that being said, one must be willing to change their writing skills to suit the requirements of their current setting. In the following essay I will reflect on past writing assignments, identifying my best and worst writing courses, strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my opinion on why writing may or may not be beneficial to me throughout my career.…

So everything—my reading, writing, and other experiences— started with my birth on October 6, 1996; well okay, not really—it didn’t start with my birth. They, my reading and writing experiences, started with preschool, which is the same for most people. These two skills are an integral part of my life; I use them almost every day. However, that doesn’t mean I have to like both of them. I did not like reading very much then, writing even more so; essays and paragraphs and essays and some more essays were painful. My writing skills, to say the very least, were not very developed. As time passed, however, my views toward writing and reading began to change and my ability to write evolved. My reminiscing begins with preschool and there, my first encounter with writing.…

I believe that I got my writing skills and passion from my mom. Growing up, my mom worked at a job that needed her to write professional letters and keep journals on the activities occurring in her work place. I remember at one point, figures above her in the ladder of work were asking her to write letters for them. My mom, only having a high school education, inspired me to really look at writing as not just a task but a hobby. When I asked her to read my essays to see if it was any good, she would be honest and really took the time to help me fix it. This very well might be the reason I enjoy writing. The only time I had ever doubted that writing was necessary was high school. My senior year was harsh with essays and writings. I lost track for some time the impact writing had had on my life because so much was being ask out of me and it wasn’t enjoyable anymore. You could say I broke up with writing for a while. Shortly after high school, our relationship was restitched and now we are going strong.…
