Tan Qing Lun Analysis

Overview of Artist
Tan Qing Lun, 26, is a traditional musician and an instructor. Qing Lun graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under a postgraduate scholarship from the National Arts Council (NAC). He is currently one of the musicians for Ding Yi Music Company, he plays the traditional Chinese instrument, Dizi. He is also currently the Ensemble Manager and a founding member of Ding Yi Music Company. In addition, he is currently teaching at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Besides knowing how to play the Dizi, Qing Lun also knows how to play the Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, as well as the traditional Indian flute. He was featured as a soloist for Singapore Chinese Orchestra and the Xi’an conservatory. Furthermore,
Qing Lun is especially active in the local traditional art scene. Firstly, as mentioned above, Qing Lun is the founding member and the Ensemble Manager for Ding Yi Music Company. In addition, he is often featured as a soloist for other art organisation such as Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Besides being involve in the traditional Chinese music scene in Singapore, he also took part in the National Indian Music Competition, where he won second place for the competition. Qing Lun was under the tutelage of Mr Ghanavenothan Retnam for three years where he learned how to play the Indian flute. Mr Ghanavenotham Retnam is a prestigious figure in the art industry. He is the first Indian musicians to be awarded the Young Artist Award for music by NAC. In addition, Mr Ghanavenotham Retnam was also awarded the "Lifetime Achievement & Humanitarian Medallion" by the World Peace and Harmony Organization in New York. Secondly, Qing Lun is an instructor at NAFA. This suggest that he is currently training up and coming musicians at NAFA. In addition, Qing Lun has also lead several schools in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for Chinese Orchestra to a gold award. Qing Lun teaching at NAFA and leading schools in the Singapore Youth Festival suggest that he is contributing to the art scene by teaching and passing down the skills to the next generation of performing
Firstly, the courses will allow Qing Lun to further his skills as a traditional Indian flautist. Qing Lun is already known as a professional traditional Chinese musicians, therefore, by completing the course at SIFAS, will allow Qing Lun to be culturally diverse, and also be known as a professional traditional Indian musician. Secondly, this will benefit the local art industry as Qing Lun will be able to connect to both the Chinese and Indian races. Qing Lun will be able to bring traditional Indian music to the Chinese communities, likewise, Qing Lun could introduce tradition Chinese music to the Indian community. Lastly, Qing Lun will be able to reach out to a wider range of audience in Singapore. By enhancing his capabilities, Qing Lun will be able to educate and share different kind and style of music to different kind of people. As mentioned above, Qing Lun wishes to reach out to people both in Singapore, and around the world through his music. Therefore, by enrolling Qing Lun in the course at SIFAS, he would be able to share his music to more people, and as well learn additional skills for the Indian flute.
