Such as the ‘Battle of Britain’ that was the German offensive to overrun British defences to allow for the occupation of Britain after the fall of another great nation, France. The fall of France was one that has been seen to be a triumphal example of German tactics of Blitzkrieg. ‘By Blitzkrieg we mean concentrated employment of armour and air forces to confuse the enemy with surprise and speed… the objective is to defeat the enemy quickly in a decision-making operation.’ This tactics was the use of two effective technology developments and the change of tactics from the First World War. The tank, first used in World War One to cross the trenches, ‘The trench deadlock of World War One was a nightmare scenario for the German Army’ Lessons were learnt from the stalemate battles that occurred through WW1. Technology allowed for tanks to go through development to make them faster, more agile and increasingly effective, removing the need for trench tactics. The incorporation of a tactic such as the ‘lightning war’ saw the German Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht gain large areas of land quickly and…

World War I used machine guns and hand grenades heavily, also taking advantage of the aircraft, such as aeroplanes, to bomb land/fields. They also took advantage of bullets called "parachute star-shell." "A parachute star-shell opens out. The ground lies stark in the pale light, and then the darkness shuts down again blacker than ever" (Remarque 209). Another weapon used against enemies was poisonous gas. This poisonous gas could temporary blind soldiers lying in the trenches, and in high doses, permanently blind those soldiers. "At night they send over gas. We expect the attack to follow and lie with our masks on, ready to tear them off as soon as the first shadow appears" (Remarque 104). With such high ranked artillery, attacking and killing the enemy was much easier than the past…

There were many weapons used in WWI, one of them being hand grenades. Grenades are egg shaped explosives that are thrown and explode at a certain time. The discovery of the explosive dates back to the 15th century and further back. The grenade is deadly, not just for the amount of fire power but because the shell disperses and sprays the shards into all directions.…

The guns were automatic that made it really easy to kill the people when they tried to go from one trench to the other. Also the gases that they used were very fatal. The gas caused many of the soldiers to get incredibly sick and die, if the gas was exposed to their skin they would get many terrible sores. Also the tunnels they built from one trench to the other.…

One of these inventions was the modern hand grenade, this was invented a few months before the war by English inventor Marten Hale. The grenade was very popular in world war one because of the popularity of trench warfare. Another thing that was invented before or during the war was poison gas, chemical warfare was very popular in the World War and gases were used mainly to clear large groups of men from a small part of trench quickly. The French first used tear gas in 1914, they filled small amounts in grenades and threw them in enemy trenches. Later in the war the French and Germans developed chlorine and mustard gas which was more effective and used them in larger quantities against more…

The way war has been fought has drastically changed over time, the tools used to fight it even more so. World War One was the first “modern war” in regards to weapons. One reason is this is the first war in which many things we consider modern war instruments were used. Remarque displays one of the most deadly of these new tools of mass destruction when het states “But that interests us less than what we hear of the new flame-thrower.” (105) The flamethrower was a new weapon used in World War One, and possible one of the most deadly. This weapon was the cause of countless deaths in the war and did so very unforgivingly, ultimately decimating bodies. Another devastating weapon that changed warfare into what we know today was the use of “…mines, gas, tanks, machine-guns…” (132). These are all weapons used to kill solders in another uniform, the enemy. These brutal weapons caused some of the most devastating deaths. Land mines would blow people to pieces if stepped on and making them physically not recognizable. Gas was one of the most gruesome weapons created in world war one. Gas would burn the soldier’s insides till he died…

Yet the effectiveness of the machine gun made up in a sense for the limited training. It dehumanized and the fact that 1300 rounds could be fired off within a minute it was more or less the act of pulling the trigger and not letting go towards the direction of the enemy. Since the French and the Germans were at a stalemate, they knew that the only way to protect themselves from the enemy was to dig, leading to trench warfare (Keegan, 258). The trench warfare became a game of sending men across no-man’s land in order to gain some leverage over the enemy. Conditions in the trenches was revolting with bodies of dead men and feces creating the perfect condition for disease, as well as trench foot caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary, and cold…

Other gases were used later in the war, like mustard gas and phosgene. Multiple advances were made with artillery as well during this time. For example, in 1915, the No. 106 Fuze was created. This was a projectile designed specifically so that it would explode upon impact--either by coming in contact with the ground or barbed wire for the most part. Other artillery technologies included anti-aircraft guns and indirect counter-battery fire.…

Trenches were built to protect yourself from the enemy(s). Trenches were generally around two meters deep and two meters wide. There was three rows. The first row was called the frontline trench. The frontline was the closest to no mans land (the land controlled by neither side of a war), it was also the most dangerous because that was were most of the fighting went on. The second row was called the support trench. It was back-up to the frontline, just in case the enemy got passed. The third and last row was called the reserves. This is were they kept all the supplies and equipment. Also there was communication tunnels connecting the trenches, they were used to transport supplies and messages to the other trenches. Trenches were very unhealthy. Lice, rats and all sorts of vermin occupied the trenches. There was little to no running water, the bathrooms consisted of a bucket in the trench. Also there was dead bodies covering all of the land. Worst of all, there was rats. They would eat dead bodies, or eat out the eyes and live in the bodies of the dead. Rats would nibble the living while they slept or when they were wounded. The other horrible parasite was lice. Lice is hard to get rid of…

Soon after, the French did the same and dug trenches to take cover from German fire. Soldiers lived in the trenches for years on end and life was not easy. Mud in the trenches could reach over two feet deep and sometimes even drowned wounded men. The mud also caused trench foot, an infection caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet and unsanitary conditions that sometimes led to amputation. The trenches were dug in a zigzag pattern to keep any sort of shell fire or explosions from spreading too far down the line, minimizing injury and or loss of life. Trenches were doug in sets of three main lines with sets of communication lines connecting them. The trench line furthest from the front was used for reserve troops. The next line was for travel and is where the majority of combat happened. The trench line closest to the front was referred to as the “Stand to”. This “Stand to” trench line was mostly used at sunrise and sunset. Many trenches started out as simply dirt, but as time went by soldiers had to adapt to making them their short term home. Trenches evolved with wooden walls, medical quarters, office quarters, some including beds, furniture, and even some electric amenities. Even with these WWI was a long and terrible war with extreme losses of life. Soldiers lived in the trenches of Europe for years on end and life wasn’t easy for any of them. They…
