Ed Gein was born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin on August 27, 1906, the second son of George Philip and Augusta Gein. Gein had an older brother, Henry Gein. Augusta despised her husband, and considered him a failure for being an alcoholic who was unable to keep a job. Augusta operated a small grocery store and used the proceeds from the sale of the grocery store in 1914 to purchase a farm on the outskirts of the small town of Plainfield, Wisconsin. Augusta relocated to the farm to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons. Ed only left the farm to attend school. Augusta preached to her boys about the innate immorality of the world, the evil of drinking, and the belief that all women (except herself) were naturally prostitutes and instruments of the devil. She reserved time every afternoon to read to them from the Bible, usually selecting graphic verses concerning death, murder, and divine retribution.…

On the Waterfront details the story of a reluctant hero, Terry Malloy, as he grapples with his conscience and ultimately attains redemption through an act of unbridled resistance against the corrupt waterfront union. As Terry comes to terms with his burgeoning ethical imperatives, the influences of others, especially that of Edie and Father Barry are of paramount importance. However, it is Edie Doyle, who through her unrelenting quest to discover “who is responsible for Joey”, provides the moral backbone for Terry, an inarticulate lowly longshoreman who once believed that his philosophy of life was to “do it to them before they do it to you”. Through Edie’s love and moral guidance, Terry is able to transform into a person who acts with moral conviction, able to overthrow the union mob and garner the respect of the other longshoremen.…

Conner worked in a variety of mediums from an early age. His first solo gallery show in New York City took place in 1956 and featured paintings. His first solo shows in San Francisco, in 1958 and 1959, featured paintings, drawings, prints, collages, assemblages, and sculpture. The Designer's Gallery in San Francisco held Bruce's third solo show. The gallery featured black panels which set off his drawings. One of his paintings, "Venus" was displayed in the gallery window. The painting showed a nude inside a form representing a clam shell. A local policeman confronted the gallery owners to get it removed, "as children in the neighborhood might see the painting." The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)stood behind the gallery's right to display it, and the matter never became an issue.…

While reading about Equiano Olaudah and what he had been through really helped me understand how strong and smart he was, and in the end he represented Africans and make them proud because back then I’m sure it was hard for Africans to show people/whites who they are and what they are capable of, and Equiano showed people that Africans are more than just slaves. He represented Africans by his desire for freedom while he was in slavery, also his desire to educate himself while he was in slavery, another way he really represents the Africans is with his identity.…

Mike Males, in “Stop Blaming Kids and TV,” inscribes government officials have blamed today’s media on the acts of kids and young adults, how the impact of violence, drug, and alcohol abuse can ruin children’s lives. Parents need to notice that their own behavior has a major influence on their children’s lives and futures. He makes strong statements that the media does not influence adolescent violence, drug, and alcohol abuse. He supports his opinion with many examples including the comparison of television violence and real actual violence. Males notes, “Kids will witness at least 200,000 acts of television violence by the time her or she are completing high school.”…

Newell tries to create corporate advantage by introducing a “build on what we do best” philosophy started by Daniel Ferguson, the CEO. Ferguson describes this philosophy in more detail in the case by stating "We realized we knew how to make a high-volume, low-cost product, and we knew how to relate to and sell to the large mass retailer." This role for Newell was the foundation for how they would obtain their corporate advantage in the industry. Ferguson identified his focus for Newell as a market for do-it-yourself products and hardware. In order to gain access to new discount outlets for Newells existing products, they acquired Mirra-Cote, a producer of bath hardware. By acquiring Mirra-Cote…

Many individuals have or had money invested within the companies they work for. A few persons may have had certain benefits and the company was not paying their part of the benefits properly. A number of companies went bankrupt or just went out of business and the monies invested by these individuals would be lost. There had to be a law made to protect individuals and the benefits. The Employment Retirement Income Security Act is a federal law that was established in 1974. The Act protects certain benefits and imposes certain requirements on the plan administrators.…

Francis Ford Coppola once said, “A number of images put together a certain way become something quite above and beyond what any of them are individually.” That is the essence of the movie Baraka (1992), a compilation of images that alone would mean something, but together they move you and make you think. The movie did that to me, from the images as a well as some of the individual images shown throughout. I will be discussing what the director, Ron Fricke, was trying to convey when he made this movie. I will touch on what exactly it is he is trying to convey with specific images that were in the movie.…
