Target Hardening Examples

Target hardening is described as a process in which helps to widen the security and strength of a building to help deter potential criminals from engaging in crime. The World Trade Center never focused on closing up such vulnerabilities which eventually lead to both the 1993 terrorist bombing attack that took place in the basement of the North Tower and the terrorist attack that took place on September 11, 2001 resulting in the destruction of both the North and South Towers. One would have expected after the first terrorist attack back in 1993 that more security measures would have been put in place but it was not enough. The problem with this was many of the people that work at the World Trade Center had little to no training in case of an emergency so this would cause things to be overcomplicated. This is specifically shown in the 1993 bombing attack which resulted in many stairwells becoming engorged with thick hazardous smoke where many individuals struggled to find their way out. The use of signaling information to help guide the individuals out of the building and special lighting designed to help them see their way out both failed. This showed a major flaw in the World Trade Center and many feared that another attack was possible so security measures began to be employed. The first example of target hardening for the World Trade Center was the use of an operated gate which would allow access for emergency type vehicles such as ambulances, firefighters and police.
