After taking the survey on listening, I learned that I have a number of factors that make me a good listener, however, there are a couple areas that I could improve upon. My survey was composed of a few 5’s, mainly, 4’s, a 3 and a 2. With the areas that I rated myself a 5 in came from listening skills that I have actively tried to improve over the years. I learned from the survey that I could give more advice and learn to enjoy silence. This is going to take effort for me because I only really give advice if I am specifically asked to by the person in the conversation because unless asked I usually feel uncomfortable providing advice. Another area I will have to improve on is enjoying silence more, this will probably the most difficult…

I agree with you that engaged listening is a necessary skill to facilitate cultural competence. It also shows genuine care and interest. Being aware of how listening looks to people of other cultures is important. For instance leaning forward and eye contact may show one culture that you are listening, whereas leaning in and turning an ear to someone of another culture shows that person that you are listening (Giger, 2013). Being respectful to cultural differences will help build a therapeutic relationship. I believe that developing good communication skills should be a priority for healthcare providers to build therapeutic relationships with culturally diverse patients. Do you agree?…

Over the course of the semester I have learned and grown remarkably in my listening and leaderships skills. EDPS 315 has been an extremely beneficial course over the semester and one of the most important classes that I have taken thus far in my educational career. Going into the course I did not think that it would have made this much of an impact on my life but I have seen myself grown as a person more in this class than any of my other courses. Unlike my other classes that are specifically directed to my major, like chemistry and biology classes, that teach you book smarts, this class has taught me important street smart skills that are applicable in my professional and personal relationships. Over the course of the semester I have seen…

The first role play in class went much better than I expected. I was extremely anxious going into the role play, not because public speaking scares me but, because I was nervous to share my stories with so many people. However, my partner, Taylor, when I was the speaker made me very comfortable. When it was my turn to be listener, I was still anxious but more prepared. I listened to Bella’s story about her conflict with her mom on why she changed majors. While listening to Bella, I had the chance to use my active listening skills. In the role play, I had both areas of strength and areas for growth.…

Active listening is when you’re able to signal that you understand and support someone. By active listening you put together the speaker’s message through their nonverbal and verbal content and feelings. Three techniques of active listening are paraphrasing the speakers meaning, asking questions, and expressing understanding of the speaker’s feelings. By stating what you think the speaker meant shows your understand and interest in the conversation. Asking questions not only strengthens your understanding of the speaker’s feelings and thoughts but also shows your support. When you express your understanding for his or her feeling it will help you check your perception of it and also help the speaker to see their own feelings open-mindedly.…

Since the incident, Rosemary, has not been sleeping at night, refuses to go outdoors, is suffering from hair loss and is unable to picture a bright future. She has great guilt and is constantly talking about wanting to go back in time and making a different decision. She is constantly thinking about the incident and begins to cry when she remembers what she went through. It is hard for her to turn off her mind and focus on something else. She is afraid to go outside because she hears that immigration officers are in Norwalk. Alberto is supportive and is concerned for her. He told me that Rosemary is not the same person he used to know. Rosemary’s biggest fear is that she will be deported to Mexico in January and that she will be separated from her children. What active listening is a process of information, which uses all of our senses but mostly through perceiving sound? Our, hearing, smell, taste and touch are sensing that we sometimes use it without knowing. Listen correctly, can be crucial to encoding and decoding the message, for clarification and understanding what the message is. While deciphering messages, you get a sense of understanding what the message is saying. Next, is trying to remember or recall what you are trying to retain. Also, evaluating what you have decoded or deciphered is essential in understanding what message is. When we actively listen, there is some paraphrasing during this process, where you have to restate information given by the speaker into…

The best thing for a person to do when confronted with such a statement is to defuse it. They must by all means avoid escalating the conflict through inflammatory statements of their own. What the person should do is to remove the focus from the personal issues at hand. Instead, they should do what negotiators are told to do. They should focus on the problem, not on the person. Therefore, instead of focusing on the emotion that was conveyed by the conflict starter statement, they should focus on the issue at hand.…

Listening does not come as natural for me as it does for others. I am always either being distracted or simply just spacing out, especially in class. Tuning out the lessons is easy when I am bored and or tired. Yet, I try my best when it comes to communicating with friends and family. I have been told that I have selective hearing and it does get me in trouble, a lot. There are times when I am in a middle of a conversation, where I don’t catch on to what the person is talking about and I end up just nodding and smiling like I understand. Or I’ll end up saying something of opposite and at that moment feel stupid and look like an idiot who totally missed the whole discussion. Either way, listening is a skill that I am constantly working on.…

I always identify myself as a listener. If I do not know how to respond to others, then I should put myself into the listener role. After I studied the chapter, I realized that I am not a good listener. To my understanding, a good listener is better at observing a person’s expressions and weigh his/her words carefully and know how to respond. Unfortunately, I always mess up with the responses, and sometimes I cannot catch the main point from the speaker.…
