Target Market of Disneyland
Hong Kong Disneyland is one of the world-class tourist attractions in Hong Kong. It aims at offering magical experiences for the entire family, especially the kids. The design of Hong Kong Disneyland is not as some as the one in another countries. Since it is the first Disneyland in China, it wishes to develop its brand which recognized globally. That’s why the image of Hong Kong Disneyland is tending to be more Chinese style. Although it is a tourist attraction, it also target at the local residents. According to Michael Dammann Eisner, the Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, Hong Kong Disneyland also dedicated that the target market also the young and the young at heart - with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration, and an enduring symbol of the cooperation, friendship and understanding between the people of Hong Kong and the United States of America.

The common characteristic between the target visitors are related to the income class. Since the admission fee of Hong Kong Disneyland is not cheap, about $400 per adult, and $300 per children. At least middle class families could afford this admission fee. Also the souvenirs inside the theme park are only available there, that’s why the price of them is relatively high.

Hong Kong Disneyland is designed for guests to leave the real world and enter one of fantasy, imagination and adventure. This aim makes customers expect a magical experience, no matter the custom of character or the decoration of the theme park. They also expect the various types of rides and on-site activities in order to fit their primary needs for visiting a theme park- to entertain themselves.

Moreover, Hong Kong Disneyland plan to add their admission fee to $450 per adult because of the expansion. Visitors will expected more on-site activities than

    Throughout the entire theme park, it is divided between handfuls of different sections. Main Street, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Toon town, Adventureland, Frontierland are all very unique from each other; giving you a different experience each time. Main Street U.S.A is just at the entrance of Disneyland and it is a replica dedicated to early 20th century America. Main Street is filled with people anxious to explore the rest of the park and full of smiles to start their day. Next we arrive to Fantasyland, a land based on classic Disney films and Disney characters walking around. I noticed every child going crazy to meet their favorite character and take pictures with each of them. Then we cruise to Tomorrowland, which has a futuristic design to it and all of the attractions are based on outer space.     One way that the ability to adapt to local cultures and tastes is the key factor in determining the success of a business in china is because it makes sure that the business has a product that the market wants to buy. Disneyland is one company who did not manage to initially adapt their product to the chinese market. Disney did not research the chinese market enough before entering the chinese market assuming that they would like the typical American image that they had. This proved wrong as consumers were unfamiliar with the product and did not connect with the typical Disney characters. This meant that Disney had entered the market with a product that the chinese did not feel comfortable with because it was not the type of product that they were used to. Therefore the Hong Kong based park did not attract many customers resulting in low sales for Disneyland costing them money. In the long run this meant that they had to spend more money on adapting the park to the consumers needs in order to attract the chinese customers. They did this in ways such as reducing the price to meet chinese low income levels and having to adapt the labour practices, décor and settings and to the local visitors customs. One very fine day, Walt Disney the founder of Disneyland had an objective that he would really like to accomplish. It was about making his imagination came true to live. His imagination was to build a land where people of all ages could have fun together, his is plan was to build Disneyland. The first plan was on the 8 acres land opposite the Burbank studios. Unfortunately, on 15th December 1966 Walt Disney was passed away by lung cancer in Burbank, California. After he died, his brother Roy Disney took over the whole Disney company. The case presents a clear picture of the importance of understanding a foreign market thoroughly before doing business there.
