It is in their nature for humans to yearn to protect others who are at risk of being in danger. The new policy, created by Target, which allows transgender people to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity, is a policy that a copious number of shoppers are strongly against; however the policy should not be seen as an issue as it is in the prevailing interest of all consumers that everyone who needs to use a restroom, deserves to be respected by being given privacy, that the government should not interfere with business affairs, and that every patron has the right to feel safe in the environment they are contributing their business to. Whether or not a person identifies themselves as a woman or man is not up for public discussion. The government has no right to impede on any commercial business in the capitalistic society of the United…

Dean Spade outlines the difficulties trans-gendered individuals have in advocating for their rights to safe spaces and gender inclusive policies. As most trans-gendered people experience some form of abuse and/or trauma, and are unwelcome in many high schools and street outreach programs, their disenfranchisement often turns into a vicious cycle of poverty. Although trans-gendered individuals are part of the LGBT community, there is a strong bias of LGBT political movements towards the empowerment of the wealthy gay individuals, and in turn the oppression of lower class trans-gendered community.…
When infants are born, the first words uttered from the doctor is the sex of the child. As soon as the sex is announced, the baby is already perceived a certain way. By categorizing human beings into two different genders, male or female, you are limiting these people by gender roles and societal expectations. When doing this it causes harm to anyone who strays from their gender or sex assigned at birth. A term to describe these people is transgender. A transgender person is someone whose identity is not the same as their gender assigned at birth. Many other identifying people fall under this category. It is time to deconstruct society's views on gender and provide necessary rights to transgender individuals. Transgender people not being accepted into society is a significant problem in contemporary culture that challenges the traditional norms of the gender binary.…
Having done this research, I understand that gender neutral bathrooms are desired and should be legal everywhere in the United States and around the world. According to Heartland Trans Wellness Group, places with multiple person gender neutral bathrooms report no complaints, no harassment, and no violence (Yokoyama). The safety of a gender neutral restroom actually does not depend on the use of different genders in the same restroom, but instead depends on the consciousness of people regardless of gender. The idea of switching to or adding gender neutral public bathrooms might feel strange to an amount of people at first; but these changes will go a long way toward improving the lives, health and safety of transgender individuals. Transgender people have the rights to feel comfortable using public restrooms. As I end my exploratory essay, I want to say that we all are created equal. However, some of us have less equality of opportunity than others. It’s time to make a…
As the psychological world knows, depression is one of the most common mental illness, with an outstanding 6.7 percent million Americans adults, 18 and older yearly according to a 2013 study done by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). As a percent it may not appear to be such a significant number in size, but taken into the population size, this is an immense 15.7 million adult Americans yearly (NIMH). And this was what was found 2 years ago, the number may still be increasing. Substance abuse is also a more than common mental illness. According to a 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), “in 2013, an estimated 24.6 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illicit drug users,…
I believe out of all the minority groups transgendered people have the hardest time economically, politically and receiving proper health treatment. A lot of families disown their children because of this, but fortunately a little girl named Malisa and a boy names Jacob had a smooth transition. According to the video, "Malisa's Story: Growing up Transgender", born a little boy who is now named Malisa "did not feel like she was in the right body" and luckily having supportive parents, she can finally be who she truly was; a girl. At eight years old they made the transition; not medically, but by using the correct pronouns on how to address their daughter. Many individuals who transition have a much harder time, even into adulthood. It is important to stress the importance that transgendered people are human beings too, just like you and me.…
One case that relates to our industry, is when a transgender man K.S, who works at a resort spa as a massage therapist who is in the middle of transitioning from male to female, was requested by his employer to massage a client who requested for male massage therapist. K.S, has reluctantly asked his employer for a new name tag (male to female). But, his employer denied K.S with a new name tag unless K.S obtained a court order name change or gender change on his driver’s license. Under K.S’ rights under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which made it illegal to discriminate based on gender. According to Transgender Law Center Staff Attorney Matt Wood, “Cases like this one are becoming increasingly common and show the significance of TLC’s recent victory in the Macy v. Holder EEOC decision. K.S. lives in a state where there is no explicit state law prohibiting gender identity discrimination in employment. Because of Macy, K.S. was able to show his employer that federal law protects transgender workers and prohibits the company from treating him differently than other men in his workplace. I’m proud we were able to help empower K.S. as well as the more than 2,000 transgender and gender non-conforming people who contact our legal helpline every…
Much of the discrimination that is faced by the transgender people comes from the same place…
In 2010 41% of transgender Americans attempted suicide. 19% of transgender people report being refused medical care and 2% have been violently assaulted in a Dr.'s office. These shocking statistics are from the United Sates. The place that's known to be a melting pot; where every person whether they're black, white, purple, orange, or just plain weird - is treated equally. We have allowed this to happen to our country. How could we be so cruel, heartless, and unsympathetic? Where did our understanding go? The understanding that allowed freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the billion other things that founded this once beautiful country. Put simply, this ongoing transgender battle leaves human beings feeling less than others and abused;…
Transgenderism have a goal, that goal is to be happy in their skin no matter who says so. In today’s age transgender has been appearing a lot more. Welch (2011) definition of transgender is “an umbrella term, refers to people who feel that their biologically assigned gender is a false or incomplete description of themselves” (pg.53). Transgender is one of the leading outcomes of suicide. It is a worldwide problem and it has been show with research; however in Canada the rates are higher. This is shown throughout the youth populations in Canada. Today’s outcome of what transgender really is can lead to different speculations of what is right or wrong. Transgenderism can lead to many different thoughts and many different opinions. The purpose…
What does it mean to be transgender? The term transgender refers to a person “who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person’s sex at birth,” (Merriam-Webster). The term came into common use in the 1970s, but similar terms such as transsexual and “trans” have been used as well. Non-conformity, in terms of gender especially, tends to evoke uncertainty in terms of law, which is most likely why transgender people are not explicitly offered rights. Some of the most groundbreaking cases have resulted in making law, creating rights for transgender individuals. However, while tolerance of transgender people as a whole has evolved, the consistency in granting rights has…
the transgender issue. “When a Transgender Person Uses a Public Bathroom, Who is At Risk?” states that the North Carolina bathroom bill is causing controversy over safety. However, there is a discrepancy on who is being harmed by the bill. There are arguments for allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of the sex that they identify with. This article also provides an argument against the use of free bathroom choice, saying that allowing freedom of bathroom choice provides the opportunity for sexual predators to change their clothes to enter a women’s bathroom and violate laws that already exist. An argument for the use of bathrooms comes from UCLA School of Law’s Williams institute, where they conducted a study to see…
