A company’s image is very important. It shows how a company is viewed as a whole. Wal-Mart has gotten a bad reputation, and many consumers have stopped shopping there because of this image. The change initiative will be to change consumer’s image of Wal-Mart. The public perception can really affect a company’s profit. According to Margot and Rachel (2011), A 2006 marketing report by Walmart’s then-advertising agency described the public’s view of Walmart as that of a “bad corporate citizen who doesn’t treat employees well and isn’t acting as a good citizen of the planet” (p.62). To change Wal-Mart’s Image they will need to change employee’s wages, increase staffing or don’t cut hours, and change the atmosphere.…

The companies I chose to do this research on are Target and Walmart. The retailing market for the companies I chose is vastly different. Each of the companies has a set of customers from different age level to different income levels, but these are not the only demographics that set these two companies apart from each other. Both of these companies have the potential for growth in the future but what will be the aspects that allow these companies to grow.…

When you think about a great shopping experience, what stores come to mind? Some people might name high end stores such as Bloomingdales, Macys , Lord & Taylor, or even Nieman Marcus. Wal-Mart and Target are the two largest retail chains in the United States categorized of SIC code 5331 which is the retail-variety group assigned by the SEC. Both American based corporations, they are the two most recognized and successful supercenters of their kind rendering several other smaller companies obsolete. Today’s economy and the increased unemployment rate have made the average American household drastically change their spending habits. The average household has to function on surviving with less. Which brings me to my topic. We have become a savvier shopper; ultimately looking for the establishment can offer the most for our money with out sacrificing quality. We have become “bargain shoppers”. When I think of a discount store two major companies come to mind Target and Wal-Mart. The merchandise and services provided are pretty much comparable. Many of its customer population shops there for two simply reasons one is out of loyalty and the other being it’s a preference.…

Wal-Mart has branded stores in all 50 states and in over 27 countries. Wal-Mart started with humble roots in 1962 by Sam Walton in the small town of Bentonville, Arkansas. Within thirty years, the small local discount retailer grew to one of the largest retail companies in the United States of America. Now it stands as the largest retailer in the world. As the largest retailer, Wal-Mart has gained many detractors. In "The Case for Wal-Mart," Karen De Coster and Brad Edmonds recognize how people “like to attack bigness” (632). Many believe Wal-Mart offers low wage jobs with few employee benefits, discriminates against women, and among many other issues, doesn’t give back to the community (631). In contrast to the constant barrage negative attacks, Wal-Mart proves beneficial to the community. Wal-Mart prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer to such a degree it has the most diverse group of employees anyone can imagine. Most Wal-Mart stores are the anchor that provides a steady stream of consumers to other much small businesses in the area. Beyond providing quality jobs for the people in and around the store, Wal-Mart brings convenience, lower prices, and provides help to those in need.…

It is in their nature for humans to yearn to protect others who are at risk of being in danger. The new policy, created by Target, which allows transgender people to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity, is a policy that a copious number of shoppers are strongly against; however the policy should not be seen as an issue as it is in the prevailing interest of all consumers that everyone who needs to use a restroom, deserves to be respected by being given privacy, that the government should not interfere with business affairs, and that every patron has the right to feel safe in the environment they are contributing their business to. Whether or not a person identifies themselves as a woman or man is not up for public discussion. The government has no right to impede on any commercial business in the capitalistic society of the United…

Target has a long standing tradition of providing superior products to consumers. Whether it is clothing or your groceries, Target is known for being a top competitor to the retail giant Wal-Mart. Target also has a long standing tradition of making economic decisions that benefit the consumer. In their most recent decision to move into Canada, Target is now moving into international business. Their brand name is not widely known throughout Canada, but given their reputation in America, Target should have no problem entering the Canadian market.…

Many discount retailers have come and gone over the years, but Wal-Mart and more recently Target, have employed business models that continually deliver profits, even in the struggling economy of the United states in recent years. Wal-Mart and Target both have expanded rapidly since their inception and while Wal-Mart has become an international retailer with stores in fifteen countries and all over the United States while Target has stayed closer to home with stores in Canada and the United Sates. Both retail giants provide well designed stores, online shopping, bargain pricing, large selection and for the most part, good customer service. Target seems to excel in the customer service area though while Wal-Mart is just adequate. Wal-Mart stores are warehouse design and bargain shoppers appreciate that they can buy tires and groceries at the same time while Target stores are more of a department store design and shoppers enjoy bargains but the trendy products provide for a different type of shopper. The product mix for these retail superstars is similar but their customer base is very different which allows both companies to succeed. There are many similarities but the differences are what makes these companies great. The fact that both companies are successful even when the economy is down shows their dedication to to providing the products that their individual customers want and need and their ability to adapt to be more competitive with each other.…

I chose one of Walmart's biggest competitors. Target uses the LIFO method. The LIFO method has its advantages and disadvantages just like the FIFO method. So as prices rise the cost of purchasing merchandise goes up, since they are using the LIFO method those cost are recouped faster. Next all business need to keep track of their revenues and cost so it can continue to thrive, so I feel using the LIFO would be better for the business to keep track of that information. Lastly the LIFO method keeps a business reporting taxes as low as they can possible be. Now some of the disadvantages of the LIFO method, so we mentioned rising prices but if the cost of purchasing merchandise drops using this method would have an opposite effect and would take…

I decided to research the competing stores of Walmart and Target. Sam Walton opened his first store in Arkansas in 1962. His visions included helping customers and communities save money and live better. Walmart was considered the nation’s top retailer by the 90’s and enjoyed its first $100 billion sales year by 1997. In the New Millennium, “Walmart made a major commitment to environmental sustainability, announcing goals to create zero waste, use only renewable energy and sell products that sustain people and the environment. (www.walmart.com)” “ In 2010, Walmart launched a global commitment to sustainable agriculture, aiming to strengthen local farmers and economies, while providing customers access to affordable, high-quality food. (www.walmart.com)” Walmart celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012 and currently employs over 2.2 million associates worldwide and serves 200 million customers each week at more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries. According to the Walmart website, their core beliefs are service to our customers, respect for the individual, and strive for excellence and to act with integrity. After some research, it appears that the organizational culture of Walmart is still subject to an authoritarian culture. Authoritarian means favoring complete obedience or subjection to authority as opposed to individual freedom. The culture is viewed this way after multiple lawsuits against Walmart from their employees regarding wages, work hours, and advancement opportunities. There are many female employees of Walmart that would like to be eligible for promotions to management, however Walmart has made it difficult for women to take those positions. They have created the management structure in a way that most women are simply unable to accept. They do this by making relocation a fixed policy for management positions.…

    Walmart Impact On Society

As the largest retailer in America, Walmart has been called “one of the most impactful organizations in the history of humanity” (Roberts 1); however, we must ask ourselves what type of impact Walmart is making. Because they are such a large corporation, Walmart has the power and ability to greatly influence our society either for the good or for the bad, and most people agree that their impression on our current society is a negative one. There is lots of controversy over the ethical and economic repercussions our country faces because of Walmart. It is evident to most people that Walmart negatively impacts communities, treats employees unfairly, and facilitates child labor in American and abroad.…
