In John Leo’s “The ‘Modern Primitives’” and Max Slowik’s article “U.S. Army considering new tattoo policy,” they discuss the topic of body modifications and the effects they have on one’s life.
Although tattoos and piercings are thought of as “rebellious” or “absurd” by many people, it does not stop one from getting them. Leo states, “We are now in the late baroque phase of self-penetration” (Leo 160). I could not agree with him more, because it seems like more and more people of our era are looking into getting tattoos and piercings, and they do not care what anyone thinks. Changing their ways is really going to cause controversy. Slowik states, “this is going to shake things up with the Army, who, like all militaries, has a tattoo culture.” I could not agree with him more because these soldiers are one big family, and by having this policy means you are possibly tearing them apart, and they might not want to reenlist. People need to be able to express themselves in their own ways. No one wants to be like the next guy next to him. People want to stand out in a way that makes them feel secure and confident, and if that means tatting yourself out and or getting piercings, and you are willing to live with them, then do it! According to Leo, “metal rings and bars hang from eyebrows, noses, nipples, lips, chins, cheeks, navels and… from the side of the neck” (Leo 160). If this is what people want to do, then who are we to try to change their minds? People can judge all they want, but the bottom line is that everyone is different, and no one is going to stop what they are doing and change themselves just because someone else does not agree with them.
