Tattoos In The Workplace Research Paper
As of 2016, it is common to find a person with at least one tattoo than someone without one. It is estimated that about 3 in 10 (29%) of Americans have a tattoo, and they don’t usually stop at just one. Even though having ink has become more popular and acceptable, most employers still hesitate about hiring someone with a tattoo. Common thought is that that person is seen as “rebellious”, or that tattoos in general, aren’t seen as professional or it isn’t the image that the employer wants for the company. The most important question for this topic is simply: what is wrong with tattoos? Also, what is the concern? However, it all comes down to the individual employer. Tattoos have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, especially in the United States. It all goes back to the US Army and Navy. While they were away they would get tattoos. ‘"I would say, across combat arms especially, probably a good 90% of everyone has a tattoo," said Staff Sgt. James Campbell, a tattooed infantryman and platoon sergeant with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade’. The first is just the general question of: “What are your thoughts on tattoos in the workplace?” and started with how the person asking the question had to cover their tattoos for years and was concerned about getting a full sleeve. Comments included: “...I would never discriminate against somebody because they have a tattoo. It is no indication of their work ethic or moral standing…”, “It's unfortunate but visible tattoos - especially sleeves and neck ones - will prevent you from being hired at some companies and limit/prevent your advancement at others…”, and “What matters is what your boss/customers/clients think about

    So what are the origins of tattoos and body piercing? In some cultures, they are a badge of honor or a representation of their beliefs. For others in the past it was a mark of possession. During WWII, the Germans tattooed each concentration camp prisoner. However, as the world changes, tattoos and body piercing are being more and more accepted in the workplace. Something like a quarter of all Americans currently have tattoos. That number goes up among younger generations. Among my peers at work under the age of 30, 75% have tattoos. This does not even take into account how many have piercings. However, only a small percentage of the hiring workforce has tattoos and/or piercings as well. This directly implies that hiring managers find tattoos to be offensive and will associate tattoos with nefarious groups like gangs and bikers, or others that are perceived to be outside the social norm.     During the commencement of the essay the author’s objective seems to be to apprise the reader of the history of tattoos. I believe the author does a very good job of informing the reading audience of how our society deem tattooing as a misfit’s act. The essay also includes very insightful information regarding how people stereotype tattoos as a sign of a person with an unstable background. The information presented raises a few great questions, “Why, with these preconceived stereotypes do people still choose ink when it may contradict who they are as a person, what they may represent and why they have chosen to tattoo their body?” The essay also has a very interesting statistic.
