Leadership. The word means so many things to so many different people. Where a person grew up, what generation they were born into, if they were raised going to church, if they had a teacher that made an impact on their life and so many different ways of life can define what leadership might be to an individual. A search on Amazon.com for “leadership” generates 113,754 results in the books section. Searching “influence leadership” generates 14,877 and another search of transformational leadership generates 6,444 results. It would seem that there is tremendous interest on how to become a better leader.
Researching researchers of leadership introduces one to Bernard M. Bass. Through documenting and measuring the differences between Transformational and Transactional Leadership, Bass redefined the way leadership qualities and attributes looked upon. (Bass, 1999). He introduces the four elements of transformational leadership as:
1. Individualized Consideration - Developing others to achieve higher levels through positive coaching and creating new opportunities to learn and grow for their followers.
2. Intellectual Stimulation – Developing others by asking numerous questions and the philosophy of if it is not broke; find a way to break it.
3. Inspirational Motivation – Developing others through teamwork, enthusiasm and communicating a vision that is obtainable and believable.
4. Idealized Influence – Developing others through sharing risk. Setting the example by consistent conduct with underlying ethics, principles and values.
What is the most effective, most common thread of an attribute of successful leaders? Several key traits and skills come to mind such as honesty, the ability to delegate, excellent communication skills, a sense of humor, commitment to see things through, a positive attitude, creativity and having good intuition.
