When we tea garden we can imagine the layer by layer green tea plant beautifully planted green valleys. The Tea garden is one of the most beautiful sides to be seen in the western part of Bangladesh. The first tea garden was established by the British government as they have observed that the soil is good for planting tea.
When the British started the tree plantation they brought the tea workers from Assam, Meghalaya, and India. The workers were low caste Hindus who were brought to this country so they could have a better life. But, their dream had been shattered when the management started to treat them as slaves. They have been staying in this country from generation to generation but they were not treated as equal as others. They couldn’t call this country their own home.
In the present time, the situation hasn’t changed that much. Now, they have to fight everyday to survive this wrath of the price hike. The wages hasn’t increased for the workers to accommodate to live with today’s world. They have to fight, go on strikes often, to make sure that their voices had been heard.
They have to live in a shabby home, mostly slums; don’t have nutritious food, even clean water, and they are completely devoid of all the basic rights of an active citizen in a country.
In this study, we try to find out the basic problems of the tea workers. We have seen that, many organizations like the NGOs, like Water Aid, are trying to help to provide them with clean, hygienic water. But the tea Estate owner doesn’t cooperate with them.
The problem that has been identified, are grave. So, it is high time to solve the problem of the worker and recognize them as the citizen of Bangladesh.
