Calcutta, India, Aug 26, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) In India 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. 5th September is the birthday of a great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who was a staunch believer of education, and was the well-known diplomat, scholar, president of India and above all a teacher. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, he was approached by some of his students and friends and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday". In reply, Dr.Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' day". The request showed Dr. Radhakrishnan's love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India.

Even though I may not find myself in the classroom setting teaching everyday, I have learned that I possess the power to transform lives inside and outside the school setting. I firmly believe that some of the best teaching occurs beyond the classroom and within everyday moments. Some of the best educators I have had in my life were not just teachers but instead were people that walked along side me in life. These people educated and inspired me in ways that could not be taught within a textbook. Each educator that I have had within my life has molded the philosophy of which I believe we should teach and inspire others with. If they willing to look in that mirror, and not run from what they see, they have a chance to gain self-knowledge—and knowing themselves is as crucial to good teaching as knowing their students and their subject. Good teachers join self, subject, and students in the fabric of life because they teach from an integral and undivided self; they manifest in their own lives, and evoke in their students, a "capacity for connectedness. " They are able to weave a complex web of connections between themselves, their subjects, and their students, so that students can learn to weave a world for themselves.…

Others, on the contrary, hold the point that presents make the significance of Teachers’ Day distorted. Someone even claims that Teachers’ Day has totally become Gift-giving Day. Although it seems a little extravagant, I agree that expensive presents should be forbidden on Teachers’ Day because it would exert bad influences on the following three aspects.…
