Teaching Assistants
This assignment shall review a research paper, entitled ‘The effectiveness of the use of learning support assistants in improving the mathematics achievement of low achieving pupils in primary school.’ (Muijs and Reynolds 2003). This paper discusses the results of a programme designed by Dr Daniel Mujis and Dr David Reynolds to examine the use of TAs within maths lessons assisting a low ability group of children. This assignment will draw together other people’s views and ideas about this matter, offering reasons for and against statements presented in the paper and gathering evidence useful to assist the discussion.

    In schools teachers are required to complete long, medium and short term planning this means that it could be planning for the entire year, the term or the week. The long term planning provides a summary of the subject content. A medium term plan shows an overview of the activities and topics example pirates. Short term shows detail such as learning aims, activities, resources, differentiation, staffing, and timescale. Usually a teaching assistant will be asked to help with the short term planning of learning activities this maybe the short term planning. Everybody attending the class such as the teacher, teaching assistant and students should know the lesson objectives which will be displayed somewhere around the classroom. The teacher and the teaching assistant will follow the planning cycle which consists of planning the lesson and what will be happening in the lesson, teaching the subject and completing worksheets (if any) and evaluate the lesson by feeding back to the teacher about what went well and what could be improved next time. A teaching assistant will contribute to the planning by getting resources together, adapt the work to suit a child’s needs, health and safety (informal) by checking if the room is safe enough to work in, the duration of the lesson which may vary with the delivery depending on the lesson. A teaching assistant will contribute to the delivery of the lesson by taking small groups to complete group work, 1:1 if a child may be struggling with a piece of work set by the teacher and needs that extra help, behaviour management dealing with inappropriate behaviour to make the lesson go smoother, record observations by recording did the pupil understand the work what could they improve on in their work, praising the children for good work.     Higher level teaching assistants (HLTAS) have a variety of training requirements to adhere to for example numerical and literacy skills up to NVQ level 2 which ensures that they are able and confident in what they are teaching. HLTAS should also have a broad knowledge of learning strategies from independent to group within the curriculum to allow a pupil to fulfil their potential. HLTAS should also have a solid knowledge of the curriculum along with skills in curriculum development and delivery this is to allow HLTAS to be able to teach to a high standard and be aware of what a pupil needs to do to get them to move up a sub level or level in different subjects. In addition to this most HLTAS are required to have experience with the children that they are assigned to work with whether this be young children teenagers, special needs or gifted and talented. It is also recommended that HLTAS have a sound knowledge of ICT to allow this to be implanted across the curriculum and in order to adhere to certain procedures within the school such as using behaviour programmes online or for cross curriculum to be implanted. Policies and procedures are also required for HLTAS to be aware of and able to draw upon when and if needed, also to allow HLTAS to know the policies the school has on safeguarding, bullying and many others. HLTAS should also be confident in regulations and laws surrounding the area in which they are working with whether this be the every child matters act or the children in care act for LAC children.
