I never really thought about what technologies have influenced me the most throughout my life. The three top things that will have most likely affected my learning would most likely be the television, my car, and my cellphone respectively. These are technological advancements that have greatly impacted communication and learning in my life. The television is constantly updated between projectors, bulbs, and changing the shape of the screen, we have even gone from a selection of thirteen channels to thousands. I regularly switch the channels between various news programs, National Geographic, the History Channel, Science Network, and Discovery Channel, which tend to be where my basic pieces of information come from. After that, I usually use my cellphone for research by accessing various areas of the Internet. As a history major I have learned that perspective is everything and everything has a perspective, the cell phone allows me to look at different perspectives of the same issue. Just listening to Fox News or just CNN will only give you a small, very skewed view of a topic. Some pros of the television and cellphone are vast amounts of controllable information that, for the most part, we can filter to whatever we want. On the other side, the cons of these technologies are that it is easy to get sucked in, and many people will believe whatever they hear or read without contest, working to the benefit of the media and authors. Plus, when we pour all of our personal information into our cellphones and they are stolen or hacked, people can steal away and ruin our entire lives.
My car may not be exactly a communication technology but it allows me to travel much more conveniently and much faster. This allowed me to travel to and from high school and college in a much faster and easier way. This allows me extra time, which can be used for exercise, sleep, homework, a job, or community service.
