Technological Improvements During The Industrial Revolution
There were many technological, social, and economic changes that took hold during the Industrial Revolution. Some examples of technological advances that took place are the steam engines, anesthesia, and the improvement of the quality of iron. Social changes that came about the industrial age are the beginning of a industrial middle class as well as an Industrial working class, labor unions were formed. A few economic developments were the rise of economists supporting utilitarianism and the laissez-faire economics.
There were may technological advances during the Industrial Revolutions. The invention of steam engines was a big development for the people. It allowed faster and more transportation. Antiseptic methods was introduced by a Hungarian to reduce the possibility of women dying during birth, but anesthetic was first used by an American dentist to prevent pain during surgeries. This drug saved many lives and helped doctors operate on patients. Abraham Darby found a new way to separate iron from it’s ore. He decided to use coal instead of charcoal. Jeremy Bentham was a British philosopher and economist who supported utilitarianism for a limited government. The goal for this type of government was “The greatest happiness for the greatest number”, which meant that they judged laws by asking if it “provided more pleasure more happiness than pain”. John Stuart Mill also strongly believed in individual freedom. He wanted the government to help support the harsh lives of the people in the working class. The laissez-faire economy was made when Thomas Malthus realized that poverty was unavoidable because the population was increasing faster than the rate that the food was being produced.
