Technology Ends Isolation In what ways has technology ended the physical and intellectual isolation of Americans?
The physical and intellectual isolation of Americans have changed due to the implementation and advancement of medicine, military power and engineering, artificial intelligence, the media, and socially. The innovation of technology not allows you to escape into a world of your own, it allows you to connect with yourself and others stateside and globally. There are many factors that contributed to the advancement of …show more content…
ending physical and intellectual isolation of Americans.
Here we will discuss a few contributing forces that made a major impact to our society. “In 1890, Susan B. Anthony along with other notable women, came together to form the
National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). These women helped to devise a plan that would win them the right to vote and to promote education at the state level”(as cited
Bowles, 2011). Their primary goal was to change the Constitution as well as gain the rights for
American women to vote. Another notable woman of the 19th century was Margaret Sanger. She introduced and paved the way for many women and families in her time. Due to the increase of women wanting to take control of their lives, the Gibson Girl image was more than just an advertisement, it was a symbol of freedom, athleticism, slimness, confidence, strong-willed and a woman who does as she pleases” (as cited Bowles, 2011). Due to the Gibson Girl advertisement, more and more women wanted to become more self-reliant and wanted to dress and do as Isadora Duncan did and or dress as the advertisement advertised. [I am fascinated by all new technology because I am a curious person and like the possibilities they might lead to.
The performer has to be intellectually, emotionally, and physically strong to be able to communicate](as cited Pusch, 2004). Pusch was talking about art in forms of choreography and
dance. Due to the rise in curiosity in fashion, freedom and art, “Margaret Sanger in 1916 opened up the first birth control clinic. The clinic gave women the option to control their pregnancy outcome as well as explore their sexuality. With warm welcomes and appreciation for Margaret
Sanger, Susan B. Anthony and Isadora Duncan, women now have the personal freedom to be who they are today.
Women like the ones mentioned above, helped to end the isolation that women faced then and now. Women now have multiple roles: They are mothers, wives, soldiers, students and influential figures in the work force. Women started off working in factories and doing work around the house (maids), and also becoming a nurse on the battlefield when needed. Gender also played a major role in the Civil War. Most often the Civil War is looked upon as a man’s war, but thousands of women also took part in the war. They fought for their cause, love of country, and to stay close to loved ones. Many people were against women serving in the Civil War. It was even against military regulation for women to serve as soldiers. During the Civil War, men in the ranks rarely tolerated women that were found to be serving with them.
The only ones that accepted women in the ranks were the husbands, sweethearts, and brothers of women that followed them to war. Those men wanted the women with them and kept their secret. Even after the war, the armies denied that women served at all. They did not want to acknowledge that women had served alongside men in the war (Zupon p.2,5). The women …show more content…
that helped to break this stereotype were Dorothea Dix and Clara Barton. [Dorothea Dix served as superintendent of female nurses during the Civil War and she opened up new occupations for nurses like Clara Barton with her hard work and dedication to end the prejudice outlook of wome providing medical treatment to men](Henretta p.419).
Nurse Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross provides disaster relief at home and abroad, they
fund blood drives to help soldiers and civilians, they provide certified courses in health and safety as well as education courses such as CPR. Without the advancement in technology, these women would not have been able to create jobs in the medical field or even sanitary volunteer work. The advancement in technology has helped to end the isolation of women working only as house wives and nurses only on the battlefield. The American Red Cross and the significance of it can be traced as far back to 1881 and continues to provide many service. Women are now physicians and doctors who perform complex operations and deliveries on a daily basis. Without the advancements in technology, women would have to find a new ways to overcome isolation as it pertains to their work ethics, careers and the way they choose to take care of their body. Many Americans have heard of the word technology. Technology comes in many forms and fashions. There are specifics that pertain to the industrialization of the nation and that
would be artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence can be considered as “the capability to create a computer that can perform logical operations so well that it could actually learn to become sentiment or conscious”(O’Leary,T. O’Leary,L, 2008). Artificial Intelligence otherwise known as A.I. began to intrigue researchers or inventers when the invention of the first computer emerged in 1890. “In the 1890s the first computer was known as a “tabulating machine that was created by a man named Hollerith. He was a worker for the 1880 census, and soon realized how tedious the job was and began experimenting with a way to have a machine perform many of the tasks”(as cited O’Leary,T. O’Leary,L, 2008). Computers have evolved full circle and are used to launch rockets into space by engineers” (Bowles, 2006), “librarians jobs have become less complex due to their job being transferred into a digital world of computers” (Bowles, 2009).
[By the 1950s, flight had progressed from experimentation, barnstorming, distance exploits,
Commercial development, and military air power, but there was one final frontier that was
untouched. This was into space. Starting in 1958, the government formed the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to catch up with the Soviets and their orbiting
Sputnik satellite. Soon NASA overtook its Cold War competitor and developed massive rockets like Apollo, which enabled a human to leave the isolation of the planet and step for the first time on the surface of the moon. Remarkably, this took less than 70 years after the Wright Brothers’ first flight](Dawson,V.P., Bowles, M. D.& United States (2005). “Scientists from NASA and
General Motors have developed a robot that can be used in both the automotive and aerospace industries. Robonaut2, nicknamed R2, is the second generation of a robot that NASA started working on with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency the same agency that created the internet. In addition to employing it in the car assembly process, GM officials expect to borrow technology used to create Robonaut2's controls, sensors, and vision systems to develop advanced safety systems in future vehicles”(Lombardi, 2010). Computers allow people to connect on many levels. In many ways computers helps you to connect with you loved ones an intimate level, if you are at work on a professional level and if you are just browsing the net, it helps you to connect on a more relaxed and personal level.
Another great innovator and speaker of A.I. and singularity is Ray Kurzweil. He predicts the future of technology and supports his data by the constant trends of the use of increasing technological in our society by displaying them on charts. Ray made a speech concerning designer babies and how the use of technology will transform us(Kurzweil). I found this speech to be very intriguing and a very good insight into what our society is like now. In regards to the previous paragraph, the technology of A.I. has helped to end the physical and intellectual isolation of Americans by individuals creating robots otherwise known as machines to do human
jobs like scanning documents instead of mailing them, machines that can recognize your voice such as your smart phone. “In 1999, I said that in about a decade we would see technologies such as self-driving cars and mobile phones that could answer your questions, and people criticized these predictions as unrealistic," Kurzweil said in a statement. "Fast forward a decade, Google has demonstrated self-driving cars, and people are indeed asking questions of their Android phones. It’s easy to shrug our collective shoulders as if these technologies have always been around, but we’re really on a remarkable trajectory of quickening innovation, and Google is at the forefront of much of this development.” Through the advancement of technology, people are able to use helpful gadgets that can help them navigate from point A to point B in a more quicker and reliable manner. Soldiers have the freedom to use artificial intelligence machines such as Big Dog Army robot. [Big Dog is extremely helpful in the battlefield. Big Dog can run along
Soldiers, walk slowly, or lay down to be loaded or unloaded, all while being aware of the terrain around it. No matter what happens, or how hard it's hit, the robot maintains its course without falling on the ground under any circumstances. With drones now taking over the skies, it's only a matter of time before a Big Dog 2.0 arrives. In fact, many analysts are already pointing at the possibility of bi-pedal robots fighting alongside Soldiers or replacing them entirely](Diaz,
2009). A.I. technology not only helps to fight wars to protect our Soldiers, it has the capabilities to choose the sex of a baby, create cars that drive on its own and allows individuals to speak their demands into a phone or computing system that can get them where they need to go. This type of technology puts information at our finger tips and helps the average person to become socially smart and puts an end to isolation at all age levels. In conclusion we have discussed how technology has changed Americans physical and intellectual isolations. Medically the world is a better place because of people like Susan B.
Anthony, Hollerith, and Dorothea Dix. Without them people like Nurse Clara Barton, and Ray
Kurzweil would not have a voice. They have helped to predict, develop and form what we call our modern day society of technology. Through them technology has evolved and changed on a global level. The handicaps that first crippled the nation in the 1860s no longer have people isolated physically and or intellectually. Smart Phones make it easier for people to get around, the American Red Cross facilitates people around the world with blood, live saving tips and health education. Modern day inventors such as Ray Kurzweil predicts the future of technology and how it will affect the world. Talking cell phones and Army robot dogs are just a few artificial intelligence machines created by humans to take the hard work out of things for us and end the physical and intellectual aspects of isolation.
