Times change and people change with them. Over the last two decades, there have been significant advances in technological innovations. Because of the creation of laptops, cellphones, tablets, and more, information is much more accessible to the average person. Today, the average person spends about 7 hours of their day using some form of media technology. (Communications Market Report) The statistics are even higher for children and teenagers, who spend about 53 hours using media technology a week. (Generation M2 Report) The excessive use of media technology can be attributed to anything from communicating on social networking cites to participating in tutorial sessions for classes. No matter the reason for using media technology, education officials have observed that the way young people learn has begun to change. For example, students (k-12) no longer have to read through encyclopedias to find out facts; instead they can simply search for facts on the Internet. Because of the change in learning, education officials have advocated for change in the traditional education curriculum. They want to move away from the traditional way of learning---books, paper, and pencils—to a more technological based curriculum.…

Amy Goldwasser in her essay, “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” challenges the idea that “kids today” don’t read or write. She argues that an average of 16.7 hours is spent a week in the average teen’s life reading and writing online. However, there are educational and social forms of reading and writing that kids do online also. Contrary to Goldwasser’s opinion and her call to action to stop regarding the Internet as a villain, I would argue that the Internet and cell phones are indeed what is wrong with kids today. It is agreeable that the Internet serves two purposes for kids today: educational research tool and social media networking. In order to refute Amy Goldwasser’s stance, evidence will be discussed…

I read an article written by Michelle A. Mendes, PHD, RN, CPN, she is currently an assistant professor at the College of Nursing, East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC. The article titled “Parents’ Descriptions of Ideal Home Nursing Care for Their Technology-Dependent Children” (Mendes, 2013). The articles purpose was to explain the needs and expectations for a home nurse caring for a medical technology dependent child from the parents’ point of view. Technology dependant in this article means the child has some sort of medical device that they are dependent on to live. “Many of these children have extensive and continuous health care needs associated with developmental or physical disabilities,…

Secondly, people should moderately use technology because an over-use of technology, such as in the use of social media sites, causes a vulnerability in real-life social skills. In “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?,” Amy Goldwasser incorrectly points out that children should use their form of reading and writing in their social lives and apply it to education. Goldwasser refutes against the claims of the older generation in that the Internet has negative consequences on children and instead, argues that the Internet beneficially impacts children because it is a form of communication that is composed of a generation of writers, activists, and storytellers. She believes that the internet has encouraged teenagers to “read and write for fun;…

No other group of people in history has had so much information and so many ways to obtain the information than the millennials. While some choose to waste away in front of their laptops as depicted in Shelved, others choose to “geek out.” Technology cannot be harmful when used properly. It makes a vast amount of information of various topics easily accessible to everyone, especially young teens. Sharon Begley points out that according to a 2003 survey of managers, “employers are spending $1.3 billion a year to teach basic writing skills” (source 2).…

As stated by the U.S. Census Bureau, “Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than one-quarter of the nation’s population. Their size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers” (Buraeau, 2015). The very thought of all these people being harmed and stripped of a real childhood is shocking. This is tens of millions of children that are now young adults who have experienced a great deal of their life in front of a screen. This generation is filled with people who have made technology a priority in their life and now have to deal with the consequences. People often state that everything is okay in moderation. Eating in moderation, exercising in moderation, and in this case, technology in moderation. Technology will always advance, and there is no way to stop that. Nevertheless, what could reduce the harm of technology is using it in a way that does not consume one’s entire life. In addition, future generations need to be taught to understand when enough is enough. More tough love, independence, and patience would be more constructive to children, rather than the impatience and dependence that have resulted from excessive exposure to technology. Psychologist Doreen Dodgen-Magee voices her opinion by saying, “With technology, we are embracing this thing that could be a wonderful side dish or accompaniment to our lives” (Dodgen-Magee, 2010). If technology and social media are only used in a positive and helpful way, it can be less harmful to people’s lives. If these changes were made future generations would benefit…

In my paper, I will be agreeing with the claim that technology has had a large, farfetched, impact on society today. I believe that it not only hurts but it also hinders communication and affect the way that children behave. I plan to argue that the theory I will be supporting is accurate and true based on facts, evidence and experience. I plan to argue that although some may say that technology has no impact on children, they are the ones most vulnerable to act on what they see and hear. Parents can have only so much control over their children but they cannot control what the child thinks or does when he or she is not in the presence of the parents.…

“I cannot imagine how I would live without it.” These are the words uttered by countless teenagers and adults about the technology they use to enhance their daily lives. It is hard to remember the days of lugging around CD’s and walk-mans. Bicycles as transportation seem like a thing of the past. Writing notes and remembering information for the next day is long forgotten. Reading encyclopedias and using books for research papers seems nonexistent. Simple technological advancements have changed how people view the world. As a child of a modern age, technology has become an integral part of my everyday life. A separation of these technical innovations…

Adolescent brains are in the prime of the developmental process and have a very short attention span. This poses a problem in today’s society with technology. Technology is an appealing escape from the real world and the responsibilities that come along with it such as work or homework. More children are addicted to technology than adults because “developing brains can become more easily habituated than adult brains to constantly switching tasks – and less able to sustain attention.” The author is saying that technology is…

In "Growing Up Digital", the author begins to speak about technology usage in schools', and how it affects the academic growth of students'. According to recent studies, technology usage causes a tendency to procrastinate, a shorter attention span, and a lower quality sleep. For example, a student may begin a homework assignment, but receives a text message so instead of finishing the assignment the student will focus on their cellphone. Thus, the student will end up procrastinating and forget about their work. Also, using cellphones, video games, and laptops were found to be more detrimental to a teens sleep pattern than television. This is due to the overwhelming experience those forms of technology provide to the brain, leading teens to forget important material learned to create room for the gaming experience that is stimulating their brain. Thus, the connection that an overuse of technology can have a negative effect on learning, however, if used properly technology can allow students' excel.…
