Teddy Gross's Article 'A Lesson In Caring'
Abuan, Deinnielle Owenn M. The Practice of Charity Teddy Gross wrote an article entitled A Lesson in Caring. The article is about the story of a father and his daughter named Nora. While they were walking along Broadway, Nora, at a very young age, noticed a homeless guy along the street. All of a sudden, Nora asked her father, if they can take the homeless guy with them. However, he did not answer the question of his daughter. A few days later, he saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who are helping elderly people. He immediately told his daughter Nora, who in turn, was very excited upon hearing the news. They went to the place and while they were helping the elderly people, he observed that his daughter was very happy. After taking part in the charitable work, they both went home with tears of joy. In order to understand and appreciate the act of charity, one needs to acknowledge the benefits of giving and receiving. In several occasions, I agree that goodness and fulfillment can be achieved by practicing the …show more content…
In other words, volunteering enhances the well-being, personality, and at times, the longevity of volunteers. Moreover, volunteering can also reduce drug use and huge declines in dropout rates and teen pregnancies. High school students in our place regularly join different projects that need volunteers such as clean – up drives and outreach programs. The reason is that they find these activities a much better use of their time and each accomplished project gives them an unexplained feeling of satisfaction and success. Countless times I wished to be face to face with the child or group I was indirectly supporting through monetary donations or through volunteer work and somehow provide them with more than just a temporary solution to their lifelong dilemma. I believe that the only true solution is to educate and provide them the means of which to construct a maintainable lifestyle without the constant support of others. In a perfect world, organizations such as American Red cross, Unicef, the Salvation Army, and every other organization that relies on donations would not exist and we’d simply live a life in which we primarily depend on ourselves. Simply because something seems unattainable or beyond our grasp doesn't mean we shouldn’t at least strive for it and that is exactly what my continued volunteer work will aim to do: work towards a perfect world. This idea reminds me of a commonly used expression by Norman Vincent Peal: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the…

Volunteering has always been an important aspect of my life. Whether donating food or painting a house, it has allowed me to be extremely grateful and humble for my lifestyle because everybody is not as blessed as I am. Volunteering has taught me that even the smallest gift, such as a smile, can be a great gift to someone because it can show that you care and want to be involved. It has allowed me to develop soft skills, and learn more about myself and my HBCU community. One of my greatest accomplishment in life was that I volunteered 1,000 hours in high school.…

However, according to Sally Brown, volunteering brings these groups together and unites communities through bonding and “mutual understanding” (qtd. in Dykhuis 16). In fact, Pappas states that many youth volunteers get started in service work through church or school. Consequently, these closely knit programs encourage friendship and address areas of each community’s concern (Dykhuis 16). This allows communities to come together through a similar cause whether that be “illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high crime rates, or drug abuse” (Spiegel and Safrit 14). Due to the different opportunities for community service, volunteers are able to understand the barriers between affluent and limited resource areas and use their knowledge of these barriers for further personal and communal…

For example, there are many who suffer from starvation and need someone willing to make sure they receive the necessary nutritional values. There are elderly people in this world who are looking for someone to talk to, and someone to comfort them. Generosity is a widely misunderstood. In many ways, people think of generosity in terms of money. For example, in modern churches, there is a new movement where tithing and offerings are branded as ‘generosity moments’. But, generosity is deeper than currency or material possessions. Being generous can take many shapes and forms. Generosity is when a person lends a listening ear to someone needing to be heard. Generosity is at play when an individual chooses to use his/her gifts to serve the whole community. Generosity is alive when we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give a drink to the thirsty, visit the prisoner, and invite the stranger into our home. The ultimate act of generosity took place on a cross; Jesus laying his perfect life, rendering it all, for the sake of humanity. And yet, in the midst of generosity, when give all we have, we find abundance.…
