The first Ted Talk was about ben dunlap and his many Hungarian mentors. He mostly focused on Mr. Sandor Teszler and is the current president of Wofford College. His uncle Henry was living under a death threat from the Ku Klux Klan. His uncle did a very Hungarian act by moving his family to Massachusetts so that he could face the Ku Klan Klan alone in South Carolina. Thinking about it, I pretty sure I would do the same thing being in his situation. Hungarians have their own equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan which I found disturbing. Dunlap states that, “Sandor Teszler somewhat resembles Mahatma Gandhi, minus the loincloth and plus orthopedic boots.” He was teased for having two club feet.…
The main issue that Lesig tries to bring forth is the idea that campaign finance makes politics less ethical. Especially with new campaign finance laws, Lesig believes that the American people are losing their connection with their elected officials, and on longer have any influence in government. While, large corporations who can spend tons of money on campaigns and lobbying have ab unfair advantage. It is important to note, that Lesig, throughout his book does not paint these individuals as bad or unethical people. He instead points his finger at the system that these people get caught in. Lesig also tries to make this book as bi partisan as possible so both republicans and democrats can resonate with it, to show that this…
This Ted talk intended to inform others about the serious plight of young black boys being raised in America. Clint Smith eloquently described the unfair rules and teachings and restriction sometimes known as “the talk” that is given to black boys of a particular age in an effort to keep them safe. The need for these rules have been brought on by bias, bigotry, racism, and ignorance of other people mostly of other ethnicities and races. “The Talk” may differ from person to person, or house to house but as Clint said in the speech, there were resounding similarities in its content across the board. Even with the seemingly bleak outlook on life that this “talk” may bring he reiterates that parents, teachers and leaders in the community must constantly recite the notion that there is always hope for changes and that we must make our children aware of it.…
Now, the typical American citizen is the business man. The typical businessman is a bad citizen; he is busy. If he is a "big business man" and very busy, he does not neglect, he is busy with politics, oh, very busy and very businesslike. I found him buying boodlers in St. Louis, defending grafters in Minneapolis, originating corruption in Pittsburg, sharing with bosses in Philadelphia, deploring reform in Chicago, and beating good government with corruption funds in New York. He is a self-righteous fraud, this big business man. He is the chief source of corruption, and it were a boon if he would neglect politics. But he is not the business man that neglects politics; that worthy is the good citizen, the typical business man. He too is busy, he is the one that has no use and therefore no time for politics. When his neglect has permitted bad government to go so far that he can be stirred to action, he is unhappy, and he looks around for a cure that shall be quick, so that he may hurry back to the shop. Naturally, too, when he talks politics, he talks shop. His patent remedy is quack; it is business. "Give us a business man," he says ("like me," he means). "Let him introduce business methods into politics and government; then I shall be left alone to attend to my business." There is hardly an office from United States Senator down to Alderman in any part of the country to which the business man has not been elected; yet politics remains corrupt, government pretty bad, and the selfish citizen has to hold himself in readiness like the old volunteer firemen to rush forth at any…
The first closed-ended question I have is: Does decision making related to psychology? The answer is definitely yes. Because in the first video David Redish said that : “Whether you are talking about neuroscience, psychology, or behavior economic, or robotics, they all come up with the same type of decision”. David Redish has studied the dynamic of brain and behavior, he has also published a book, he know this adequately. In my opinion, decision making is closed linked with brain and psychology, every behavior or decision that human made in daily life is strongly connected with our cerebrum.…
I already knew that the United State’s government system is corrupt. In particular, it talked about Bill Clinton’s presidency. Bill Clinton’s presidency was from January 20, 1993-January 20, 2001. As we all know, Bill Clinton was impeached from office due to obstruction of justice and perjury. Bill Clinton established the Clinton Foundation in which it was a non profit organization that helped. The FBI is currently under investigation with this foundation. They suspect that the Clinton foundation donations went to Hillary Clinton as she was secretary of state during Obama’s presidency. It’s interesting how politicians can tell our country something that sounds great, but in turn it tends to be corrupt and damaging. There is always a catch to everything. Although a certain group of people benefit from the idea, there are always people who have to make up for it. For example, the idea of free healthcare sounds great. There is no such thing as free. Money has to come from somewhere. In this case, the minorities would be getting free healthcare and the middle class and upper class citizens would have their taxes increase to make up for the minority’s free healthcare. This shows that our government is corrupt due to the fact that they deceive people. An example of this is Obama Care. The government deceived people by making them think that there can be such a thing as free healthcare and then go behind the…
Political corruption has been around seemingly forever. It’s like a weed that never will go away no matter how much you want it gone. Indeed Robert Lekachman noted, “Greed characterizes the workings of government” (360). Bell, California is an example of how political corruption took place. City councilmen and women took misappropriations of public funds, raising taxes and pocketing most of the money. Members of the city council took advantage of citizens, stealing the money they paid in taxes. Robert Rizzo, city manager, was making nearly $800,000 a year, which demonstrates how corrupt people in power can get to be. Bell, California demonstrates how the government imposed unfair taxation and the changes the taxes were going to make, never happened.…
As we are watching the makings of this election season unfold in front of us, many of us are quick to defend or challenge any presidential candidate. It is during this crucial time that, not only do we get to see the politics that people hold dear, but also the the embodiment of the leader they want. Some people would say that they would rather have no leader instead of one of these candidates. However, leaders are a necessity, for any group, organization, or established, set society and community. In Common Sense, Thomas Paine states that “Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil”. He elaborates, saying that when we encounter miseries from a government, that we would normally encounter with the lack of one, “we furnish…
There is corruption in the United States Congress. It’s so bad that some congressmen and state legislatives are going away to prison. Almost all of the corruption is either from money or through indictments. Just to think that us as American citizens we have voted these corrupt people into office. They’re offering no help to our country only negative things.…
Businesses Figure out that they can use their wealth to influence policy makers. Another article…
The Industrial Revolution is undoubtedly a very important part of America’s history. Looking back on that era, it is clear to see that it was a time for some serious change. That change, however, came with its ups and downs. With all the new machines invented and rapid social and economic change taking place, lives were definitely being changed. The nation experienced urbanization during this era and the impact of the events that happened then still make a resonating impact on us today.…
Political leaders are doing away with transparency and making deals behind the closed doors. Take former United States president Richard Nixon as an example of political corruption in a well-established and powerful democracy. On the 17th of June 1972, several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee, through the investigation of the FBI, the true nature of the burglary was revealed. The arrested individuals were found to have been working for President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and were accused of attempting to steal documents belonging to democratic presidential nominees as well as wiretapping the offices and phones of government officials. While president Nixon could not be directly linked to the actions of the burglars, president Nixon was made to resign after allegations of a cover up and obstruction of justice.…
“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government,” Thomas Jefferson once said. The government is a precarious, but influential, part in the world today. Many believe that everything the government does should be implemented in order to keep structure in our daily lives. However, bureaucracy is not always right. The government can often prove it can not be credible, plausible, or dependable. For as long as democracy has been in place, people have disagreed with it. Yet, if it were not for these disputes, government would never be anything that it is today. It is appropriate to go against the government if there is a conscience-challenged problem that can be solved civilly.…
This paper will discuss what interest groups are and the role that interest groups play in American politics and why it is important. Another thing that this paper will discuss is how interest groups have influenced American elections. American elections have been influenced with direct and indirect strategies to get a candidate elected. They have also been influenced wit the use of information. The direct strategies used where more in your face and out for everyone else to know about and where very effective. While the indirect strategies used may have been hidden and in the shadows they were also effective. The use of information was helpful to put things out into the world and it was also there to help the candidate that was being supported by the interest group gain popularity and/or publicity. Towards the end of the paper the role of interest groups and how they have influenced American elections should be understood.…
Many Americans live a life that is ruled by bills and family matters and have almost no time to worry about what goes on outside of their lives. However, while many Americans live the “American dream,” the officials they elected have been corrupted by the power and the wealth. Decisions made by many of these officials haven’t been based on the interests of Americans, but on the interests of big corporations and billionaires around the world. The U.S. government has been corrupted through bribery and manipulation for many years now.…
