Teenagers who are becoming parents are on the rise. There are several different stereotypes that teen parents face daily. Society automatically assumes that the teen will drop out of high school and live off the government. Society today sees a young parent and automatically starts making assumptions about them. Society is not always right with what they think the teen parents will end up doing with their life. With enough motivation, a teen parent can accomplish anything. Teen parents have to decide if they want to become another statistic or prove that not every teen parent has to be on government assistance in order to raise their child. Teen parents Haley Barker and Reece Lord from “We feared a baby would ruin our lives but now we are working teen parents and proud” by Kelly Strange, did not want their child raised on government assistance. Barker stated “People always assume the same-that we’re living off the government. Nothing could be further from the truth but people see a teenage parent and make assumptions.”(qtd in Strange) A lot of times a teen parent has to put off college to get a job to support their child. Barker said “We did have dreams about the careers we wanted and I hope we will be able to pursue those in the future.” (qtd in Strange) Getting a job is the only way most teen parents can be an independent parent and not have to live off the government. Some teen parents go to high school during the day and then go to work after school to support their child. To some it is important to finish high school so they can get better jobs to support their child. Working late at night and getting up early to go to school is very tiring. Then you have to get up during the night with your child if they are hungry, sick, or they just can’t sleep. There are times a teen parent will get up and go to school with just a couple hours of sleep. Being a teen parent is a very tiring and hard job, but if they keep reminding their self that their diploma is important to them then they will keep pushing and graduate high school. As some teen parents get older they may decide that they want to go to college and pursue their dream career. Although it is not easy it can be done. Most teen parents that decide to go to college work a full time job also. Having a child to take care of, homework to do, and a full time job to keep the bills paid can be overwhelming at times. Some may think that it is too much to take on and decide to stay at their present job that they may not enjoy but they do it for their family. The ones who succeed in getting their college degree are the ones who had the most motivation. Not all teen parents give up and drop out of high school. They also don’t sit on their butt and let the government support them. Like Barker and Lord did, teen parents can accomplish raising their child without the government. Barker said “I’m proud we did it ourselves without handouts and life is better than I had hoped. I don’t want people thinking it was easy because it wasn’t.”(qtd Strange) They had the motivation to raise their child without the government helping them and they succeeded. They are just one success story because they did not give up and they knew exactly what they wanted in life. Teen parents have to keep in mind it won’t be easy but it will be worth it in the end. Some think that just because, you are a teen mom does not mean you can not just be like any other teen mother. A lot of people think just because you have a child as a young adult, that your life is over. It’s not. It’s just begun. Teenage mothers are dropouts are a lot of peoples stereotype against teen mothers. You can manage a child and go to school, yes it would be a lot but you still can manage it.With a good support system and hope in yourself you can finish it. Teenage mothers are less likely to finish high school then a regular teenager.(“Stereotypes”) Teen mothers are single moms. This is not entirely true. You can be a teenage mom and still have the father in your and the child’s life. The father does not always leave, most do yes, but not all. They want to think they can make it in this world, even if that meant having a child at a young age. Theres a lot more stereotypes like teen moms are bad moms, and that their on drugs. You can not judge someone on their age and why they do things. Most teen moms do not mean to get pregnant, but when they do it changes their life for the better. If they was doing something bad before the had the child then it changes their life and makes them want to do better; however on some it does not. We should not stereotype those teen moms who actually are not the bad ones. We should not stereotype them all just for a few bad…

Teenagers who become mothers have a very slim chance of having a good future. If a teenage girl gives birth while still in high school, she will most likely drop out to care of the baby. They also might not have the support of their family and therefore do not receive the knowledge of how to properly care for the baby. The mothers would be forced to rely on public assistance and advice on how to raise the child. However, if they do marry the father, they might end up divorced and have to raise their baby as a single parent.…

So many teens today are becoming parents. When I was in school their were a few girls that were pregnant, but most of the teenagers cared more about shopping, and going to parties. I look at high school kids today so many are pregnant or already had babies. I believe teenage pregnancy is one of the top reasons teens drop out of school. In the article “Teenage Pregnancy Is a Serious Problem” written by Kristin Moore and Barbara Sugland, they state that “the children of teenage parents often do poorly in school.” With a lack of education limits teens employment possibility, which effects how well they will be able to take care of their self and child. Teen pregnancy is just one of the consequences for having sex at an early…

Parents should allow their children to grow up on themselves for them to be able to make difficult decisions, so they realize how it is out in the real world. In both the articles “‘Snowplow Parents’ may be trapping their children” and “Kids of Helicopter Parents Are Sputtering Out” show that students’ parents are way more involved in their lives than they should be. Students should be allowed to have more freedom to be able to have fun, but they should also know that having an education is important to become successful or at least be smart in an area of their interest. As students graduate high school they are only a step away from being left alone by their parents and having freedom. Parents should be there to listen to their child’s needs…

While there are a number of vulnerable populations in the world, very few receive the publicity, funding, and assistance that they need to survive in today’s society. There is a vast amount of media coverage on the elderly population and homeless children. However, most vulnerable populations are not recognized and assisted due to personal biases or a lack of education regarding their situations. Teenage mothers are one such vulnerable population. The general public is usually biased against teenage mothers and feels that they are responsible for their situation. Because of this belief, they are often shunned by society and thought to be uneducated and promiscuous. In fact, most teen mothers become pregnant due to a lack of education about sex and contraception, particularly within their home environment. “Too often the problem can be traced to the failure of society’s adults to take responsibility for the safety of its children.” (Stepp, 2008)…

Instead, they choose to drop out and find it may be better to go straight to working to help their families out with their financial problem. Poverty often causes hard times and, “roughly 30 percent of students who drop out of school between the ages of 16 and 18 are working in a variety of jobs”(Rosales). Clearly, these students work to support their family in low-income communities. Most also feel it is a waste of time and others want to attend school, yet don’t have the opportunities to stay. Not all students from low-income families drop out to work, but for some their work hours may run into school hours. And for the low-income students work may be more crucial. They feel as though giving up on their education to help out their family is their final option. This decision of dropping out of high school will cost them all of their life’s potential. Because they did not receive a good education, they will most likely work low paying jobs throughout their live. These students are trading their futures for a cyclical they will have to live financial problem they have with for their whole life. There have been many studies showing both drawbacks and benefits of teens holding a part-time job. Many people praise part-time work saying it contributes to the transition from childhood to adulthood. Some benefits include, learning how to effectively manage finances, learn time management skills, form good work habits, and instill a sense of responsibility and independence. As well as benefits, there are also some drawbacks to teens holding part-time jobs, which include less time for homework, less school involvement, and increased stress. Researchers suggest that students who work less than twenty hours a week gain the benefits of employment while students who work more than that suffer from the drawbacks. Students’ having a part-time job also gives them their first real dose of reality. They get to learn how to maintain good grades in school while working.…

tribulations these teens are facing. “The National Campaign says that fewer than half ever graduate from high school, and only 2% earn college degrees by age 30” (Docksai, 2010). Many of these teens are not thinking about the negative effects of being a mother between the ages of 15-20, and there are a bunch of them. Some of these outcomes include “school drop out, strain on public health and welfare systems, low-birth weight babies, increased medical costs, poverty, stunted workforce development, child abuse and neglect, and developmental delays and disabilities among infants and children” (Rosell, Scarborough, Lewis, 2010). It is said that “young girls who have children, often before completing their education, are less likely to marry and more likely to have additional children than those who delay parenting to a later age” (Sawhill, 2006). From seeing shows like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom on MTV, it is not hard to witness the truths of what some of these young women go though. There have been many of the teens on the show that have trouble with school or have had to drop out. A lot of them also face major money issues because they themselves cannot hold a job while raising their child. Teens are not thinking about the consequences they will encounter in the long run, and it is causing a huge dilemma. Although there are still troubles with teenage pregnancy, there are people out there who are putting forth effort to help the social problem. However, if kids spend the majority of the day at school and work, where is the time for their homework and studying? When they come home from work, depending on the time, young adults are tired, worn out, and really not worried about their homework. Students tend to fall behind on the course work when they do not manage out the time between school and work well enough.
