Data was collected by the researcher name to numerous to mention in the community of Portsmouth which is situated in the northern area of the island of Dominica. It is a rather large community with a population of 5,000 persons.

This topic chosen for the research was no other than the effects of teenage pregnancy on the teenagers of the community of Portsmouth. This particular topic was chosen by me because it was part of the SBA choices and this type of problem is very important in the researcher’s community.

The researcher once every week visited the health care center and observed that most of the pregnant women who attended check up were teenagers.
Teenage pregnancy can be best defined as becoming pregnant during the ages 13-19.

This method of investigation used was by a set of distributed questionnaires.

Questionnaire:

This method of investigation was chosen because it allows the researcher to collect information from a large number of persons over a short period of time. Also the researcher does not have to be present with the answerer so that the individual would not feel intimidated by the researcher presents.

To collect data the researcher distributed fifteen (15) questionnaires to thirty (30) persons from the age 13 and above in the community of Portsmouth. The researcher informed the respondents on the purposes of the questionnaire and allowed them to keep the questionnaires for no longer than one (1) day.

Fig. 1: Show the age range of the respondents, most of the persons who answered the question were once teen age mothers. The majority of the individuals consisted of six (6) persons range from 16-20 years. Next was 20-35 with a total of three (3) persons

Fig. 2: Shows the highest level of education that the pregnant teenagers have obtained. Eleven (11) respondents indicated that they only obtain education till CXC level, five (5) reached O’levels, three (3) A levels and one (1) common entrance

Fig. 3: This illustrates the percentage of the occupations which the respondents have. The majority of individuals were students gathering a total of 36%; secondly we have an equal percentage of House wife and commercial at 20%. While domestic at 15%. 9% was neither Student working.

This majority of respondents stated that teenage pregnancy has a great effect on the teenagers and her career achievement. The highest level of education that most teenagers have reached is CXC and the most common reason for reaching that level of education is the cause of teenage pregnancy. The respondents stated that their life has changed for the worst because they had to postpone their studies for the cause of teenage pregnancy. Five (5) respondents stated that becoming pregnant while going school placed a setback in their educational development. Also the respondents stated that leaving school prematurely affects ones chances of career because teenagers lose interest in their studies. Most teenagers are not sure whether or not they want to continue their studies.

In the interview the respondents stated that teenagers get pregnant at an early age because of low self esteem, peer pressure and environment which they grew up. They also stated that parents should have a closer relationship with children to decrease the problem of teenagers getting involved in sexual activities. More than ninety (90) percent of the interviewers stated that teenage pregnancy is most rampant at an early age because teenagers do not know much about sex and pregnancy.

I strongly recommend that: • The government should set up sex education classes for students to get educated about teenage pregnancy. • Teenagers should always use a condom when having sex. • Sex education programs should be regularly shown on television.

The researcher indicated that the most contributing factor of teenage pregnancy is viewed as social problems. Teenage pregnancy limits the career achievement of many individuals and as a result, many individuals are being underpaid and considered to be very low in their community. The individual also lose out on the joys of adolescent hood and hinders the teenagers from achieving higher education. Teenage pregnancy can also affect the emotions in pregnant women. Some of the common reactions that can come out as a result of teenage pregnancy are fear excitement uncertainty and confusion in ones life.

During the procedure of the questionnaire, the researcher received many limitations. Thirty (30) individuals received the questionnaires three misplaced theirs; five could not read and write properly or had little knowledge on the subject Teenage Pregnancy and several individuals skipped questions they did not feel comfortable answering. Because of these limitations the researcher was unable to present accurate results.
