Through the years, the situation of teenage pregnancy has grown abundantly throughout the United States. Sex education taught in the school system can help teens realize the consequences of having pre-marital sex and prevent pregnancy. The realities and effects of teen pregnancies are sometimes difficult and harsh to face for the mother, father, and child.
Teenage pregnancy is one-hundred percent preventable. The smartest way to prevent teenage pregnancies is to not become sexually active until you are married, this is called abstinence. But not all teens follow this, and often they feel they are pressured to have sex. Teens need encouragement from friends and …show more content…
family, to wait until the appropriate age to get pregnant or even have sex. Unfortunately, some teens are influenced by television shows, such as: 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, and The Pregnancy Pact. Friends also give your ideas of having sex at a young age.
Teenagers who have become sexually active at an earlier age are at greater risk of getting pregnant, because young teenagers are less likely to use birth-control. By the age of fifteen, about thirteen percent of teens have already became sexually active. A large amount of teenage girls who have sex before the age fifteen, have been victims of sexual abuse. By the age sixteen, more than fifty percent have had sex, and by the age of nineteen more than seventy percent of teens have had see.
The most common ways to prevent teen pregnancies is to use a condom, go on the birth control pill, or get the birth-control shot. Nearly two-thirds of the teenage pregnancies are due to having unprotected sex, and teens not understanding the significance of sex.
In the 1950’s, there were about ninety out of one-thousand mother’s that gave birth under the age of twenty, and in 1978, fifty-two out of one-thousand pregnancies, were teenage pregnancies. Among the years, past and present, obstetricians think there have been 689,000 unintended teenage births, an even higher number of abortions, and fourteen percent end in miscarriage in 1981 . Rates are now on the rise again.
Teens of all ages are facing unplanned pregnancies. Almost eight percent of the teens that are fourteen years old, eighteen percent of teens that are fifteen to seventeen years old, and twenty-two percent of teens that are eighteen to nineteen years old become pregnant each year .
Physically, teen mothers face greater risks. Teenage mothers have a higher risk of anemia, cervical cancer, high blood pressure, and a greater risk of having a miscarriage. Teenage mothers children have a higher risk of getting SIDS (Sudden Infants Death Syndrome). The child also has a higher risk of fetal distress, having behavioral problems, being born prematurely, late development, and low birth weight (Teen np).
Ninety-six percent of unmarried teenagers end up keeping their babies but when some teenagers think about their futures, they think it is best to adopt. They don’t want to have to worry about the money and if they can afford it. Some also choose abortion because they don’t want their life to change.
Teen mothers are not the only ones who face tough decisions.
Teenage fathers face changes, too. Teenage fathers sometimes don’t offer much financial or emotional support, but they know it is their responsibility to help out with the child since it is theirs. Most teen fathers are shocked when they find out and they don’t want it to be real. They do get a say in whether or not they are going to keep the baby. Most of the time the fathers make the women get paternity tests, just so they know it is their child (Fathers np).
Teen mothers lives change drastically. Teenage mothers are less likely to attend college or even get their high-school diplomas since they are so busy with, or preparing for the baby. Teenage mothers daughters are twenty-two percent more likely to become pregnant in their teen years.
Teens don’t feel mature enough to have a baby at such a young age. When they have a baby, they have no free-time, they have to change diapers every two hours, and get up constantly during the night. They miss out on childhood; they shouldn’t have to do all that stuff. They should be attending parties, playing sports, and dreaming about their futures. Teenage parents' lives change dramatically when they have a baby. Do you want to have to worry about financial planning or a little person to take care of? Getting pregnant at a young age is hard and there is no reason you can’t wait until you are
older.
You hear about teen pregnancy in movies, in the news, at school and from your parents. You know it’s not a good idea to get pregnant when you’re still a kid yourself. You know that teen pregnancy leads to all sorts of problems, to abortions, and to more. You know there is a better way. Teenage pregnancy has become a very big issue in today’s society. According to statistics more than 3/4ths of our teenagers are becoming pregnant. That’s at least 750, 000 births per year. Parents are letting there guard down on our teenagers. Most parents are even worried about their kids. They let do whatever they want, most teens don’t graduate high school.
