Alison Bechdel demonstrates on “compulsory reading” essay that children should never be pressured on reading books or stories beyond their desire ones, otherwise they develop aversion toward reading. She begins by admitting that she was a hardcore reader when she was young, but that change when her parents give her undesired books to read. Consequently, Bechdel develops a strong aversion toward reading. Furthermore, she loathes reading that anybody suggested her. She becomes an adult with a strong hatred toward reading, however that changes when she founds more compelling books on her parents’ book shelves. Children are naive and skeptical therefore adults should not force them to anything beyond their desire interest…
the author dana gioia wrote the article "why literature matters" to show the interest young Americans showed in literature has been decreasing dramatically over time. gioia builds his argument in a few ways. gioia persuades the audience of the impertinence of reading by using personal expirences, using facts to prove his argument and quoting studys by his peers to show his viewpoint is a common one. by using examples from his personal expirence, the author is able to creative a connection with the readers which will help persuade them. gioia puts a large focus on literacy, and seems to be personaly effected by this worrisome diminishing in book reading over the years.he states some of the consequences of not reading regularly can have on…
No matter how young or old you are knowing how to read is a powerful tool. Reading provides you with an imagination and the ability to escape into another world. You gain the courage and confidence to speak in front of groups. And reading allows you the opportunity to write and empower others. As Dr. Suess said, “the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”…
Reading classics enables me to be exposed to literature written over the years. In one of my favorite childhood books, "Little House on the Prairie," I was able to learn about how they lived years ago. I was learning facts while still taking parry in an enjoyable story. Teens need to be exposed to different texts. They need to be able to enjoy a story while still learning something from it. Whether it is a reading skill, or fact from the book does not…
Finding one book that intrigued Stephanie enough was all it took to make her an everyday reader. The same goes to me. When in my earlier years I hated reading. There were only two things I hated to do. Those two things were reading, and doing what someone told me to do. Hating a combination of the both you could see how the disposition with reading would subsist. It wasn’t until the summer going into middle school that I changed my ideals on the subject.…
Books have an important influence in our life. They teach us something, they help us imagine and they help us create our own world so we can do whatever we what with it. Nowadays, teens have entered the world of reading. They read more than they used to but why? The answer it’s easy. They read because there are some writers that help them enter a whole new world and experience with it.…
Not a lot of students enjoy the readings because they cannot relate to the stories. We are given books that may have been popular in the 20th century, but mind numbing in the 21st century. In “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read”, by Francine Prose, she shares her opinions on the books that are currently being read at school and how they are being taught. Francine states that “high school is where literary tastes and allegiance are formed; what we read in adolescence is imprinted on our brains as the dreamy notions of childhood crystallize into hard data” (pg. 90) The texts we read in high school are not challenging enough.…
When I was done with school I didn’t think a single thought about reading when I came home . All I could think about was the football match I had later or the video games I was going to play. “If you read 30 minutes a day, instead of playing video games or being with your friends, you would be a much greater writer and your vocabulary will expand”, my dad often said. And I totally agree with him, but those 30 minutes felt like hours to me, and I was just too tempted to do almost anything…
The newness of reading had worn off by junior high. My leisure reading had decreased significantly due to sports and increase in textbook reading assignments made by our teachers. The textbook reading assignments changed how I felt about reading. When in elementary school, reading was learning, but what we were reading were nothing more than stories made up by a publishing company. There was usually a lesson learned at the end of the story. Textbooks didn’t have that same story like nature. They were full of facts and what seemed like complex analogies and theories. Reading was not fun anymore.…

Girls and boys from school districts around the world are encouraged to practice reading in their daily lives due its beneficial effects. Writer Alan Maley encourages Extensive Reading, which guides students to read independently and extrinsically. He believes that it, “develops learner autonomy...enhances general language competence” and, “helps develop general, world knowledge” (Maley 2-3). However, the number of people choosing to spend their leisure time invested in a novel is declining by the year. According to Charlotte Alter from Time, “45% of 17-year-olds say they only read once or twice a year, but in 1984, 64% said they read once a week or more”(1). The reason for such a decline can be traced back to technological advancements distracting the younger…
There are some really great readers in my family such was my grandmother, mother, brothers and all three of my children they love to read. I kind of have my own opinion why I don’t like to read. I think you have to have it instill in you as a child. Now that I am getting older maybe reading will become my patience someday.…
In order for a child to excel in school they need to be well versed in reading therefore; I believe that it is vital for all children to learn to read. Not only should reading be a fun and enjoyable experience but something that influences the child to succeed in all subject areas. Reading is an integral part of life that needs to be mastered. A child can master the basics of reading in the early years and should be learned at that time due to the aggravation and frustration of learning those skills later on, as he/she gets older. Although there are many children and adults alike that hate to read it is our job to spark an interest in these children so they will find reading enjoyable. All of the aspects of reading should be equal and balanced in order for the child to learn. Although I loved reading when I was younger, I still had to ingrain this behavior into my own children so they could see reading could be enjoyable and that it was an everyday part of life.…
If someone would ever tell me to stop reading books, I would be miserable. I love reading- I read when I am stress, depressed and lonely. Reading eases my mind, and it is like an escape from all the problems I have. I believe that reading is important for me because it is a way to improve my knowledge and learn something new. Also, from reading, I have gained new styles and genre to become a better writer. Writing became part of my habit, and I always learn new information every time I read. Reading also expands my vocabulary: it also helped me speak English better. I would never let someone take reading books away from me because reading helps me in every way, from communicating to putting myself in a better mood.…
I hate reading. In school, I learn how to read and reading can help me to understand better. I can feel like reading can help me to succeed in school by being an active reader and reading books can help me write a better essay. When I read more, it can give me a confidence of what the story is and to help me identify a main idea of a story. After I read a story from a book, it gained me a better confidence of starting and beginning on how to write an essay. Moreover, if I allowed myself to keep hating reading, I will be in a library sliding my fingers as I read a book to myself and to relax. Finally, I learn how to enjoy reading and make it benefit for me by improving my grammar as I write an essay, communicate better and to expand and learn…
