Teeth are made of four main tissue. Dentin, enamel, pulp, and cementum are the four tissues. The teeth’s pulp is the innermost of the tooth and is the softest tissue in the tooth. It sends signals to the brain. The pulp is made of nerves, connective tissues, and many types of cells and blood vessels which nourish your teeth. The primary job of the tooth’s pulp is to provide sensation and nourishment. The pulp is one of the only living parts of the teeth, so it has a high risk of infections.
Enamel is the hardest and outer most layer of the tooth. The enamel protects your tooth from wearing down while chewing. Enamel is the thickest part of the tooth, so it provides some protection. The enamel is the hardest tissue in the body, but it is easily damaged. The primary issue with enamel is that it cannot mend itself.
The cementum is the outermost layer of the tooth and starts at the gum line. Cementum is yellow. The cementum protects the
tooths roots and keeps the tooth inside its socket connecting to the jaw bone. A layer called Periodontal Ligament sits between the cementum and the socket which helps attach the tooth to the jaw bone. Cementum slowly forms throughout the tooths life.
The dentin is located under the enamel and over the pulp.
It is a hard, bone-like material that takes up most of the tooth and contains nerves that send a message to the brain when something is wrong with the tooth. Dentin is also a yellow color and gives the tooth a yellowish appearance. Dentin is softer than the enamel but harder than bone. The dentin is a living tissue so it can have some growth and repair. Many things can hurt teeth. Hard candies which can chip teeth and cause a reaction between the tooth and the sugars in the candy. Another thing that can hurt the tooth is ice, it may be fun to chew, but the hard substance of it can damage the enamel and leave the tooth very weak. Watch out for citric acid! This can erode enamel and make the tooth decay. Sticky foods stay on the tooth which causes severe damage. Although sports drinks fill people with energy, the sugar reacts badly with the tooth. Over-brushing can hurt your teeth as well. Over-brushing can cause sensitive teeth and receding
gums. There are three kinds of teeth. The incisors, the molars, and the canine. The incisors are the top and bottom teeth in the front of the mouth. There are four permanent incisors and four primary incisors. The molars are the flat teeth in the back of the mouth. The canine teeth are the sharp, teeth next to the incisors. There are four canines all together. There are two primary and two permanent. There are about twenty primary teeth and exactly thirty two permanent teeth. People usually get all the permanent teeth (except for wisdom teeth) when they are around thirteen years old. People who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have about sixty two percent more tooth decay than others.
