Telecom has emerged as a key driver of economic and social development in an increasing knowledge intensive global scenario. India is progressing to play a leadership role and provide inclusive growth by laying special emphasis to affordability to its entire citizen even in far flung remote areas. There is no denying fact that the telecom industry in India has shown unparallel growth. The telecom now is not just an infrastructure sector but also deemed to be a service sector, a technology sector, an innovation sector and even an IT sector. The management of this sector has become quite complex not only for the policy makers but also for the service providers, equipment manufacturers, systems integrators, passive infra-providers, handset manufacturers and at the end of it the customers. Under this complex scenario, research & development has become a vital necessity in every facades of telecommunication.
Though the country have lot of potential to be a leader in innovation which it was not able to, because of the challenges it faces in terms of research and development, policies, work force, invention of new technologies, etc. In order to overcome this lag in research and development particularly in telecom sector, Telecom Centres Of Excellence (TCOEs) were setup across various premier academic institute in the country.
The research work which I did is to develop the business model for the futuristic work of Telecom Centres of Excellence India (TCOE India) which act as the coordination centre for those TCOEs. TCOE India needs change in their model of working as they were facing problems from industry and other sources while executing the research in academic institute in terms of funds for performing the research. One more problem they faced was there were no sources for raising research issues except the government and academia from the beginning.
