Upon researching the current Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) that the company is currently using the following components, Local Loop, Central Office, Local Exchanges, POP, Long Distance System, and Fixed Line. A brief description of each components are as follows: a Local Loop is a simple network that connects a home to the Central Office of the Telephone Company. It consists of twisted pair cables with a maximum length of three miles. The Central Office is an office in a locality to which a subscriber home and business lines are connected on the local loop. The Local Exchange is a service that provides calling within you exchange. The exchange is a specified area which usually encompasses a city, town or village. (Federal Communications Commission, n.d.) The POP also known as “point-of-presence” is an artificial demarcation or interface point between communication entities, the POP was a location where a long-distance carrier could terminate services and provide connections into a local telephone network. The Long Distance System allows a call to be patched together with direct, physical wires going from one phone office to another phone office, then a long distance provider keeps track of the length of the call to provide a billing record. A Fixed Line refers to a phone that uses a metal wire telephone line for transmission. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , 2014) Cellular telephones have types of telecommunications components, voice and data. GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is an open, digital cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice and data services. GSM differs from first generation wireless systems in that it uses digital technology and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) transmission methods. GSM is a circuit-switched system that divides each 200kHz channel into eight 25kHz time-slots.
