Entertainment Essay

Entertainment has provided society with an escape from reality, which at times may be very stressful and chaotic. The relaxation that entertainment provides is necessary for the overall well being of people. Peace and accord can be found through relaxation, and for many people this is achieved through entertainment. Some entertainment may be damaging to society because it is degrading, and lacks cultural enrichment. As a result, I qualify the assertion that entertainment has conquered reality. I agree in the sense that as the quality of entertainment has declined, so too has the richness of society. I disagree in the sense that entertainment provides society with a diversion from reality, which gives people a respite from the daily anxiety in peoples' lives. Entertainment, defined as movies, music, video games, television, and theater, has caused the demise of society in many respects such as increased violence, increased sex and increased profanity. Violence, especially juvenile violence, has dramatically increased over the past few decades and I believe that this is a result of violence in movies, music, video games, and television. Because children tend to repeat and reenact what they see, and if violence is presented to them on a regular basis as it is on television, then they will mimic these violent acts towards others. Violence in video games is even more dangerous because not only is violence presented to them visually, but it is also interactive, which provides children with an opportunity to take part in videogames through violent acts such as auto theft or murder. Violence has been expressed in music as well, especially in rap music. Rappers have been idolized because of their notoriety as a result of their violent backgrounds and lives. The infamous rapper, 50 Cent survived nine gun shot wounds and he is more respected because of his past. The music industry has become very competitive and sometimes this results in

The other way media portrays violence is by music. Rappers like Eminem have violent lyrics. One example is when Eminem wanted to kill his wife and ask his daughter to help throw her mom in the bottom of the ocean because he made a bed at the bottom of the ocean. When reporters ask him why he has such violent lyrics he blames his alter ego Slim for everything that happens, with his family, and work, that is bad. “I do promote violence and I don't care.”-Eminem. Hip-Hop and Violence

The article ''Hip-Hop Causes Violence,'' focuses on society's generalization that rap music promotes, encourages, and thus causes violence. For the most part, the author of the article defends the genre, claiming that there is limited evidence that supports the argument that listening to violent storytelling has a direct effect on everyday life, which scientifically is very hard to prove. The author states that there are many other forms of entertainment outside of hip-hop that encourage violence. But violence in film, and other genres of music aren't nearly criticized as much as in rap music. Rappers claim that hip-hop is at the mercy of unfair targeting and blame. Many who have studied the topic say this criticsm has much to do with the stereotypes of African- Americans. The author also points out that hip-hop's main target audience (the youth of poor black communities) are more at risk to violence than the typical middle-class teenager playing violent video games or watching violent movies. Another factor that plays a huge part in this argument is that most skeptics of rap music interpret it all as autobiographical. Even though many successful rappers have openly said their lyrics should not be taken so literally. Jay-Z even confessed that it is important for rappers to exaggerate the ghetto lifestyle as that is the only way for their voices to be heard.…

Adolescents are growing and developing individuals who are continually going through changes in every aspect of their lives. Each experience in an adolescent 's life will continue to shape knowledge, attitude, and behavior, and media continues to be an important influence. Most adolescents are able to separate fantasy from reality, but there are children who are susceptible to the theory, that media represents the real world. “The debasement of our culture, of which gangsta rap is a big part, has coarsened children in general and put high-risk kids in a dangerous place.Taking drugs, carrying guns, and disrespecting human beings is now not only socially acceptable in many situations, it is downright glamorous”(O’Reilly). This shows how we as a society can reduce one aspect of violence in a violent society and expect real results. Youth violence will not be seriously reduced without violence in other aspects of our culture being addressed. In the same vein, modifying media violence alone will not have much effect but to ignore it will make efforts on other fronts less successful. Despite the fact that the media have limited independent effects on youth violence, we need to expand the focus on them.…

The association of violence with alcohol also increased, but the relationship was not as pronounced as that with drugs, Explanations for the rise of gangster rap and violence in rap music have tended to focus on two basic themes. Representatives from the music and other media industries have argued that media violence is a reflection of actual social trends. Echoing this perspective, some scholars have focused on the structural conditions – oppressive economic and social conditions, the crack cocaine drug trade and ensuing drug war, and high levels of police brutality – within urban ghettos that promote violent themes in rap music. Within this framework, other writers have focused on the violent lifestyles of major rap artists as an explanation for the rising tide of violence in the…

Scott's article, "Rap Music and its Violent Progency: America's Culture of Violence in Context” approaches the issue of "rap music as a creative expression and metorphorical offspring of America's well-established culture of violence. Richardson and Scott's point of this article was to answer the question to what the role of rap music is and how it contributes to voilence in society. Richardon and Scott pulled different statistics and data from violence within movies, video games, and music. This artical states, "Violence in music is not by any means limited to rap or gangsta rap. Folk and country music have contained references to murder, killing of police, and domestic violence for decades" (181). The method of the authors was to place rap music in a context that was unusual to the audience, the authors grabbed several different ideas about rap music such as; capitalism and rap, political and judicial scrutiny of rap, rap in the scholorly literature, rap within cultural capital and social reproduction, violence in rap music and overal rap musics effects on the culture. The authors did not exaclty answer their research question, they merely just implemented different ideas about violence and rap in order to increase the audiences knowledge on the given subject. The authors arrived to the conclusion that "[r]ap music has drawn attention to the subjugated life and senseless violence the mainstream culture attempts to…

When hip-hop music emerged in the 1970s, the American people did not foresee the growth and influence the music would gain. First, during the popularization of Hip-Hop in the late1980s, music artists such as Ice-T and Public Enemy used this “art” form to express their frustration with the American political system. Thus, this artist quickly turned the music into “poison” for the American culture resulting in rise in violence. Ice-T wanted to take a stance against the corrupt in American society, but ended up negatively adding to the situation, and driving the youth to murder white police officers. Secondly, NWA (Niggas With Attitude), another popular hip-hop group, comes to mind when examining violence in American hip-hop culture. NWA’s controversial lyrics consist of topics such as gang banging, drive-by shootings, and police confrontations. For instance, two of the most admired hip-hop artists, Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace were killed in drive-by shootings, which influenced gang activity, the source of a large percentage of violence in America. The Bloods and Crips, two large gang groups, were linked to the murders of these music artists. The American youth were negatively effected by the violent behaviors that hip-hop music promotes. Violent connotation shown through hip-hop music is popular in the media, but the attention quickly shifts to the…

Entertainment has provided society with an escape from reality, which at times may be very stressful and chaotic. Fast entertainment is the center of everyone 's day, maybe its music, television, internet, or your cell phone. We are all seeking and craving entertainment all throughout the day. Entertainment today has become a skyrocket business. Mostly everything in our lives has something to do with entertainment. Certain forms of entertainment have overtaken the lives of society as a whole and it seems all morality has been lost and sucked into this world of entertainment. The question I have been asking myself is, has entertainment taken over society? A lot of people think entertainment is not harming too society in any way, but I have many reasons why I think society could be better if we didn’t rely so much on entertainment. As Craig Watkins writes in the essay, fast entertainment and multitasking in an always-on world, “like fast food, fast entertainment is easy to get, all around us, and typically cheap, but not always good for you.” (Watkins 143)…

To avoid the exposure of entertainment would be difficult. Whether it’s the Hollywood blockbusters, the television sitcoms, the young adult novels or the music pumping through your speaker, entertainment is everywhere, serving as the portal to the world around us. Neal Gabler’s assertion that entertainment has the capacity to ruin our society holds some truth, but I believe that it is more beneficial than detrimental. The impression that entertainment will bequeath on an individual depends on the intention and extent in which it is utilized.…
