That is a shallow affect, a shallow affect is a deep feeling or belief in something that isn't real, and or isn't there. He showed that feeling throughout almost half of the story. He was very confident that he heard it which is another psychopathic tendency.
He told on himself out after he pretty much got away with the murder. He told on himself because he thought they could hear the man's heartbeat like he claims he can. This is called shallow affect and impulsivity. He almost got away with it after using a lot of confidence. Having a lot of confidence is thinking you're superior to everyone and that he thought he knew what he was doing. Then he ruined it by claiming he was already caught because he thought he could hear the man's heartbeat and claiming so could they.
The narrator was a psychopath. He had multiple psychopathic tendencies. He didn't care about anything. He didn't care about anyone. He had no loved ones. He didn't have any remorse for what he did.
