The Tell- Tale Heart finds its own way in literature using methods that were once new at the
time, however are still part of the core foundation of modern literature. With the use of building
anticipation, dynamic character transformation and making changes to the structure of the plot builds
to the depth of the story.
Edgar Allen Poe starts the story by building anticipation, when the character claims that others
call him a madman the audience already start to wonder the reason behind this statement. Also when
the young man stands in his home with the police officers and he starts to hear and feel the beating of
the mans heart. Instead of just rushing to the point of when the man admits to the murder Poe
tortures
the character through a hand full of sentences until the man bursts out his confession.
The character in the story goes through a number of changes of how he views the events that
take place throughout the short story. When he is first introduced to the audience he comes across as
calm. However through most of the story he becomes fixed on murdering the old man he shows no
remorse when the runs through the plan of killing the man. In the end when he had succeeded the man
was glad that it was finally over, but as soon as the police came to investigate he started feeling
nervous. The last part of the story shows that the man feels guilty for what he had done and does not
view the situation in the same way he had before.
Lastly Edgar Allen Poe uses different elements to change the plot of the short story. One of the
ways he does this is by using a method called foreshadowing. This is still used in modern literature to
a large extent. It help to build up anticipation and creates a link between two different parts of the story.
In the story Poe introduces us to the young man and how other people call him a madman because of
what he did. This brings the end of the story to the foreground showing the effects his actions had on
his life after the murder. It is an interesting way to grab the attention of the reader from the start.
