Imagine that you are walking from one job to the other, knowing that you soon will be fired once again. Imagine that you cannot obtain success, no matter what you are doing in your life. You are stuck in your girlfriend’s apartment, knowing that you could be kicked out at any moment. You are just sitting there on the couch, just hoping that you’re not going to make things any worse, simply because you have given up. This is just some of the problems, the person in the short-story “Tobias” deals with.
It isn’t easy to be unemployed, especially not if you are experiencing failure with every possible job, you could ever imagine, time after time. More and more people lose their job everyday because of the competition and the missing vacancies.
The main character in the story is Tobias, which is why the title is “Tobias”.
Tobias is a middle-aged guy, who was formerly a teacher that eventually got fired. After that he tried his luck as a bartender, but that didn’t go well either. The last job he had was to be a night clerk at a hotel. Eventually he was fired from there as well. Now Tobias is unemployed, and living a depressed life in his girlfriend’s apartment. Tobias has simply given up. He can’t force himself anymore to go looking for a new job, and therefore he just spends his days doing nothing but eating chips and playing guitar.
Through certain sentences you can sense that Tobias is a very unhappy person and is just blaming everyone else for his unemployment. Page 2, Lines 24-26 “I’ve had a life.” – “I’ve had a quite few jobs, after all. They keep firing me. It’s not exactly my fault that I’m not working.”
He is claiming that he once had a life and that having a job, makes you live and makes you important in today’s society.
“Unemployment” and “giving up” is two of the biggest themes in this story.
