Telly's Creatures From The Black Phenomenon
The Wandering of a Freshman: part Six “The land of the monsters”.

As Telly walked to the Cafeteria from his English class, he wondered what he had for lunch today; he opened his backpack and realized that he had left his lunch at home! As Telly looked over at the creatures, they instantly reminded him of the story-book characters from “Creatures from the black lagoon!” but without them turning out to be nice in the end. Avery, one of his best friend, offered to share his lunch with him though. Telly was really hungry and immediately went to wolfing down his half of the sandwich. Once he finished, he felt…weird.

The boy pities this “lost thing” and therefore, decides that it is his personal responsibility to attempt to find out where this creature belongs. Shaun Tan wrote this book primarily to entertain and amuse his audience; however, he also included various controversial comments on the power of bureaucracy and various other social concerns. Although, the simple sentences and an even simplistic storyline suggest this book is set for the older primary aged children, however, the complex issues and concerns raised by the book allude to the fact that it can also be read by the adult audience.…

My plan for conducting interviews with the Black house kids in Chicago started with my key co-collaborator, Dxxxx Pxxxxx, who is a well-known and highly respected presence in the house community. I knew that he would provide the entry point for where to conduct my spatial observations of the spaces that the house kids used for their social gatherings. This led to combining my snowball sample technique that Dxxxxx helped oversee as well as the house kids that stood out at the party selected for my fieldwork, for various reasons, during my first observational study at the Underground Wonder Bar. Thus, I developed a master list of names and checked off who was present at the party that I could speak with as follow up. After my participant observation…

Tom Jonson was on his way to investigate a strange town named Rooshwater. No one ever visited the town, and no one ever left it. Most assumed it was a town of inbreed hicks who knew nothing, or did not care, about the world outside it. Tom had been a curious man his entire life, he loved mystery novels, engineering, and exploring exotic countries. He heard about Rooshwater from a website that focused on the paranormal and folk stories. The stories said, horrible ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and cannibals dwelled at the town. Tom didn’t believe it, who would believe such nonsense? Tom just wanted to take a look around, prove to himself and everyone else that the legends of Rooshwater were foolish stories that only idiots would believe. He had been driving for days now, following maps and signs hoping that he wouldn’t get lost. “Maybe the cannibals and ghost would get me.” He said jokingly to himself. The view was incredible in this part of the world. It was just turning autumn. The trees were a beautiful red and orange, “Just like the movies.” he thought. He didn’t need music to keep him sane on such a long drive. He watched the birds, listened to the waterfalls, even saw a few deer. Tom was interested in many things, nature being another one. While observing a particularly colorful tree, he caught a glimpse of what looked like a man and a lizard mixed. It had leathery green skin with a long tail. It stood on two legs, had long arms that came to its knees with long claws that looked as if it could rip a large animal apart in seconds. The most horrible part of all was its face. It had huge crimson red eyes, and a mouth bigger around than Tom’s head with razor sharp teeth. Tom was stunned. The creature distracted him for too long; he swerved on the road, hit a pothole, and then crashed.…

On the ship en route to Bermuda, the children lived like there was no tomorrow. They piled food on their plates with a lot of everything they liked. Sure enough, they couldn’t finish it. So they quietly poured the remnants of their unfinished food overboard. As they did this, a snippet of their father’s speech came back to them. ‘’When there is a lot of food, take only a little. If it isn’t enough, go back and take some more. This is much better than taking a lot and then throwing it away just because you can’t finish it.’’ ‘’It’s not like we are going to do this for the rest of our lives,’’ reasoned the children. ‘’It’s only the first time. Dad doesn’t have to know.’’…
