Temperature Change Lab Report Essay
The purpose of this lab is to determine an accurate time when the ice completely melts and the water starts to boil. The problem is which type of temperature change will result from heating ice to liquid, then boil (steam)? What will happen to the water after the boil? I hypothesise the water heats ice to liquid and then goes to simmer and boil. The independent variable is the hot plate changed to a burner itself. The dependent variable is what we are measuring is the time. The steps in the lab were to first start off with a burner, ice and water in a beaker, then record time and water temperature. Also, some phase changes in between. Our results were immediate, leading to safe and what I hoped would have happened. The difference between my data and the class’s data would have been a different amount of time the water took to boil. My result did agree with my hypothesis. For example this lab had endothermic and exothermic reactions. Endothermic reaction was the heat and energy flowing into the water and around the beaker; bringing it to a boil point. Where the particles move faster usually collide more frequently and some particles tend to leave the liquid. Exothermic reaction was the heat coming from the water that made the phase changes. Since this was a physical change it was reversible, no new substance was created, and no color change. occurred.
I didn’t have to make any changes to my original hypothesis as I collected more information and data. It is important to reevaluate your hypothesis in experiments like this because if there were any changes made you can study your hypothesis. A hypothesis doesn’t have to be correct or accurate, it’s just basically a simple prediction. In addition, reevaluating your hypothesis is important you get a chance to back track and modify any changes made

    Start off by weighing two paracetamol tablets using some accurate scales. Record the mass down (1.15g).     The experiment indicates some systematic errors with some of the equipment we used. For example, if we used more accurate thermometers the densities of the water and overall temperature of the water would become more accurate to the true temperature of the water, and decrease the percent error of the data.     From the results recorded it was identified that activity A and C had exothermic reactions, whilst activity B had an endothermic reaction. Each of the activities had initially begun with 23.4/8/9oC, however, within one minute of adding the 2nd reactants, the results began showing, as seen from the graph. Activity A and C had risen in temperature, with A gaining 4oC and in total of 2 minutes having the temperature of 27.9oC along with C increasing by 2.2oC and within 2 minutes of the experiment having the temperature of 26oC. Activity B however was the anomaly in the test, as the temperature went lower, by 1.9oC as within 2 minutes, the Ammonium Chloride and water had the temperature of 21oC. Furthermore the line graph shows Activity A and C rising to its highest peak, although it eventually reduces. Activity A for example, was rising until it reached 27.9oC and it continuously decreased, until the 10 minute mark had reached having the final temperature similar to the initial temperature.     First we chose an unknown metal, in which our unknown was unknown metal 2, the metal was gray and irregular shaped. We setup the calorimeter and got a mass of it just being empty then we got a mass with 30mls of water in it. We found the mass of the water by subtracting the mass of the empty calorimeter which was 49.987g and the mass of the calorimeter with water which was 87.332g and got the mass of just the water 37.345g. The metal was placed in a test tube 5cm high and we got the mass of the empty test tube that was 42.703g and then with the metal in it and it was 72.607g. We heated the 300ml of water to a boil, then placed the metal that was in a tube and waited 10 minutes before we took it out. The temperature of the water before the metal was placed was 20 degrees Celsius, when we put the hot metal into the water and stirred it with the stirring rod it was 29 degrees Celsius, the change of the temperature after the metal was placed was 9 degrees. We ran this experiment twice to compare the results. In the second experiment we found that the mass of the calorimeter and water with 50mls was 100.033g and the empty calorimeter was 50.857g. We subtracted them two and we got the mass of water was 49.176g. The temperature of the water before the metal was placed in was 21 degrees Celsius and then when the metal was heated up for 10 minutes the temperature went up to 28 degrees Celsius. The change in temperature in the second trial was 7 degrees Celsius.…
