“When we first started it was for a better cardio workout and to stay healthy. I had no idea on how to play racquet ball but Tom knew. Starting out we played by the rules. But as the weeks went by so did the rules. We would kick, push trip etcetera.” Kevin explained. At Edgewater Park racquetball and fitness it was in the summer of 1986 Kevin and his best friend Tomas White wanted to stay in shape in a exciting way instead of using boring treadmills. So they solved this problem by taking up racquetball. Thinks hard to remember the time Kevin says “At the time I was a Junior in highschool and Tom was a Senior so I was about 16 and he was 17 years olds.”…
To be successful in the game of tennis is dependent on the player’s technique as well as biomechanics which play a vital role in stroke production. A fundamental mechanical structure is founds in all tennis strokes.11 The backswing provides the distance. Tennis players need to be able to control the direction of the racket and the timing of the entire movement. The skill level of the tennis player depends largely on the mechanics of their forehand swing. The force of impact is determined by the racket speed at the moment it comes in contact with the ball. When maximum distance is used for accelerating that is when maximum velocity can be obtained. Body weight support is necessary for the forehand drive because shifting weight when striking the ball will increase ground reaction force to the body and the ball. A player wants to be balanced to direct power and energy without losing control. Forward momentum will carry the racket through the ball after contact. The follow through helps prepare the player for the next stroke. It should be long and the arm and racket should wrap around the body. It dissipates kinetic energy off the racket and that is when the player wants to arrive at the right point and balanced to be ready for the next stroke and to be able to play the ball back. The player’s body must absorb the remaining energy of the racket and the…

First I gathered all of the materials I would need. I got white tennis shoes, rubbing alcohol, sponge brush, tiny paint brush, spoon, white fabric paint, white acrylic paint, and sharpies (black, aqua, blue, navy blue, purple, violet, and pink). To start the project I took the shoelaces out so they would stay nice and white. Next I colored on the shoes with sharpie with spots of color and large spaces of black. Then I took the spoon and poured a little bit of rubbing alcohol in it and dumped it onto different spots of the shoe. I repeated this step until it was covered fully and the color was as bright as I wanted. After I let the shoes fully dry I took the white fabric paint and painted on stars, dots, and flicked on tiny speckles. Finally…
"Did you see the ending of that Duke game!" The president, Bill Clinton, was astonished by the miraculous ending of the Kentucky vs. Duke game. Just about anybody you could talk to would know about the game and also be astonished by it. This can show the effect a game can produce on a person and a school. During college sports games, a school and fans can be affected in a jubilant or a depressing way. For example, a school could begin to build a program with many wins to come, or they could go straight down. Also, a fan could be feeling so happy as if he is "on cloud nine," or he could feel like he has been killed as he takes pride in his team. Although this impact can be a bad circumstance, several delightful impacts can turn into traits. Three of these traits are persistence, self-esteem, and leadership. All three of these traits take place in each of three games that are arguably the greatest college sports games of all time. College sports games clearly can affect a human being and change his feeling whether it is bad or good.…
It's that feeling when you get to that ball that you never felt was possible or when you beat the girl that you thought you could never beat. It's those moments that make the long terrible hours worth it. It makes the hot sun, or freezing winter a little bit more bearable. There's a certain feeling that you get when you walk onto a court and you know that you feel good and on top of the world, you only get it a couple times in your life but when you feel that way, there is nothing or no one that can make you feel better. There's only one person that can make you feel this way and that same person is the judge to how often you feel that way too. Everyday, I get on that court and I have to, I need to, try my hardest…
The Ward brothers and many individuals of the community had many different identities shown during the movie. The Ward brothers seemed to be very childish and a lot less socialized than most people. Their social self as well as living in a poor society is the main cause of their lack of intelligence and care free attitude.…
Tennis is a highly competitive sport with participation in over 200 countries throughout the world. It is a non-contact racquet sport which requires aspects such as strength, power, speed, coordination and agility. Like any sport, tennis places specific demands on the body which can predispose any player to injury. These demands placed on the body result in injuries specific to the game. It is said by Pluim et al (2006) that although many injuries that occur in tennis are common in other sports, tennis has its own unique profile of injuries. (1) Injuries such as lateral ankle sprains, calf strains, lower back pain, tennis toe, shoulder impingement, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), ulnar collateral ligament tears and wrist strains are all…
Enclosed within a 27’ X 78’ tennis court it was the final point of the match. As I shuffled and pivoted to the right with both my arms gripping my racket at shoulder height; I took a deep breath as I approached the tennis ball and made my move. I pondered how my nerves synapsed with my tendons and ligaments in my arms and feet to produce a forehand, while monitoring my heart beat and regulating metabolic demand, an intrigue with the workings of this familiar, yet mysterious body. It was a matter of seconds, and the ball landed exactly on the boundary of the singles’ court. Game, set, and match! Ten years of practice has taught me every point be played like my life depends on it and these experiences led me to my passion and my future: medicine…
Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…
Did you know that Michael Jordan is widely considered to be the best player in basketball history? For example, he had 8 MVP awards and he led the NBA in scoring for 8 years. Also, he was the second player in the NBA to score 3000 points in a single season. From his childhood to his high school and college years, and then to his career in the NBA, Michael Jordan's life has changed a lot.…
With the Americans leading 9-6 ½ and needing only 7 ½ more points on the final day to win their first Ryder Cup since 1999, the event still only managed to draw an unimpressive 3.3 rating on NBC. While the ratings were up 22% from 2006 standards, when the US players went across the pond, they were slightly higher than what WWE wrestling show draws on a weekly basis. The ratings look even more anemic (3.3 vs 13.5) when compared to the NFL football game that the Ryder Cup was pitted against. For an event that is hyped much like a major, it really failed to deliver viewers.…
The same aggression to improve that I put into rising in ranks academically, I also put into my new sport of choice; tennis. From very early on, I have been determined to improve as a player and have thrown myself at any opportunity to do so. This drive has helped me transition from the bottom of varsity to the top-ranked male player and team captain for both my junior and senior years.…
When I was in Montessori, my teacher always told me to follow my dreams. Throughout my school years, I always put 100% effort into everything I did so that I could find my dream and pursue it. The Montessori Christmas play, visits to multiple farms, Summit Soccer and Basketball, Knights of the Round Table, and Praise team all helped me find my true passion and led me to being the person I am today. All those years I was searching for my true passion until one day, I found it. My mom handed me a racquet and I was set to follow my dreams.…
